Peter Ricketts resigns from Ameritrade to pursue public service

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Ameritrade Chief Operating Officer Peter Ricketts resigned his post on Thursday, saying he will explore an opportunity in public service.

Ricketts, in a statement released on the company's Web site, did not say what he intended to do other than to leverage his "corporate world experience for public service."

A Republican, the 40-year-old Ricketts could challenge U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson, a Democrat up for re-election to a second term next year. Nelson is the state's most prominent Democrat up for re-election in 2006, and the only member of Nebraska's congressional delegation who is not a Republican.

A company spokeswoman said Ricketts would have no comment beyond what is in the company's release.

Nelson's spokesman, David DiMartino, had no comment on Ricketts' resignation.

Nelson is widely expected to seek re-election to the Senate next year. Two Republicans, former Attorney General Don Stenberg and former state party chairman David Kramer, have announced their candidacies.
