Nun surrenders to Omaha police

BY JUDITH NYGREN

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Sister Barbara Markey, suspected of using Omaha Archdiocese money for personal expenses including gambling, gifts and travel, has turned herself in to police.

A warrant for the 71-year-old Omaha nun was issued late last week, accusing Markey of theft by deception, a felony punishable by a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.

After Markey turned herself in Wednesday, she was booked into jail and later released on her own recognizance. She listed depression among her medical conditions on the arrest report.

She is scheduled to appear in court Friday.

Neither Markey nor her Lincoln attorney could be reached for comment this morning.

Mary Markey said today that her sister is caught in the middle of a financial disagreement with the archdiocese, not a criminal act.

After her firing, according to the Notre Dame Sisters, Markey left Nebraska to enter a treatment program. The group has declined to elaborate on the type of treatment Markey received or where.

According to the warrant, an audit revealed that Markey spent $307,545 for her own use or without documentation.

7. Ok, but what about the gifts and travel?
I'm not about to give her a free pass because she may have a gambling addiction.
