Could we beat Conrad Burns in 2006?
How popular is he? Montana seems to be leaning to the left more and more. You guys did go for Clinton in '96 to boot.

1. Probably not much of a chance but who knows?...
It depends on the candidate and how much more harm * does. This state is funny - they split on Senators and remain very loyal to them.

3. Not unless he does something horrible.
And not with a candidate like Tracy Velasquez (who ran against Rehberg for congress this time). She's a Bozeman yuppie and there's no way Montana will ever elect someone like that.

4. 51-49
He was reelected by a mere 2 points in 2000, against Scweitzer though. You'd need to set up some good moderate leaders in your legislature for the nomination. Make Burns' environmental record the issue, and nickname him 'Monty Burns.'

5. I think Burns is very beatable
His environmental record is bad, but no big deal. The fact that he's a senile old racist however.....

I think that Mike McGrath, the Dem Attorney General, will run and probably win.

8. senile old racist
Absolutely the way to go. Start making a HUGE issue about what an embarrassment the guy is. Montanans like to think of themselves as fair-minded, as least the old-timers do.

10. That is sweet, I like Mike McGrath
http://www.mikemcgrath.com/

I was looking at his website and he seems like a great guy. Plus Democrats make better Attorney Generals (We have the national advantage 29-21 and even have an 8-4 advantage of AGs in the South) so we should be able to find a candidate to run replace McGrath. Schweitzer would even get to pick his replacement, right? He/she would get their feet wet for two years and then run in 2008 again. The Republicans didn't even field a candidate against McGrath this time around, it's possible they wouldn't bother in 2008 again.

7. He is very beatable
only won by 14,000 votes last time.
If we get Schweitzer out endorsing a candidate it will go far.
Personally I like to see Max get the boot too.

12. Me too. I won't vote for Max ever again after he helped bush ram
through the awful prescription drug company subsidies.

I would love to see a Democrat challege Max in the primaries. Since the proposed bush budget cuts so many federal dollars coming in state, he won't be able to use his usual, "I bring home the bacon" argument very effectively.

11. That means he went in on Bush's coat-tails
Gore obviously didn't bother campaigning in Montana and so that left it to the red. Bush won't be on the ballot this year and Social Security WILL be an issue.

13. Democratic Candidate for Senate, Clint Wilkes
This is why our party will never be able to topple
predominately Republican States. This gentleman, Clint Wilkes
is not who we should getting behind. I know him personally
and i know that his background is very shady and his business
practices are to say the least deceptive. This is not a smart
move for our party to be endorsing a candidate with such weak
moral and ethical fiber. Once this race heats up, someone,
somewhere will expose this gentleman for what he is, and once
again, it will be the Republican Party who gets the last
laugh.

14. His candidacy is a non-starter.
There is a race, but it is between John Morrison and Jon Tester.

Good article on Monty
http://www.counterpunch.org/frank06242005.html

quote:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I've met Senator Conrad Burns on two separate occasions: once during a visit to his plush office in Washington DC, and the other at an airport in Montana while he was campaigning for reelection. It wasn't long into our first meeting when I realized the Republican couldn't care less about the state he purportedly represented.

Yeah, I admit it - I was a bit of neophyte back in the day.

When I visited Sen. Burns in Washington I had a chance to chat awhile with a couple of his sprightly young interns. Both had thick southern accents. I remember how overly eager I was to ask them what they thought about some of the pressing issues that were facing my home state at the time. And I was surprised to find out that neither had ever even been to Big Sky Country. When I pointed this out to Burns he just chuckled, patted me on the back, and divulged in his raspy voice, "I don't hire the cute ones for their brains, kid. I hire 'em cuz they are easy on the eyes."
