Roy Blunt's dishonest ads and lack of plan
If I have seen one ad it seems like I have seen a thousand from Roy Blunt. Although many of them are from big business (Chamber of Commerce) or Karl Rove's club of millionaires (Crossroads GPS) and now lately the NRA which seems to talk about a lot of non-gun related issues. Perhaps the R now stands for Republican instead of rifle, or maybe right-wing. The National Rightwing Association.

But the Roy Blunt ads always say "check out my plan at Roy Blunt dot com." So I finally decided to just so I could write about some of the flaws of his plan. The first flaw is that he does not seem to have a plan. Going to Roy Blunt dot com and there is no tab that says "Roy's plan". So I feel a little bit like the Mayor from "The Music Man". All summer long I have heard about a plan. Well, where's the plan?

Perhaps it is under the issues tab on "jobs and the economy" where Roy says "Restoring the Land of Opportunity". Yet instead of talking about a plan, Roy first goes on and on about the stimulus and starts right off lying. Roy calls the stimulus "nearly one trillion dollars in new government spending". Except that the truth is that the stimulus was only $787 billion and that it was $288 billion in tax cuts and credits and less than half a trillion in spending. http://www.recovery.gov/Pages/home.aspx

Roy also calls it a "now failed stimulus" which is another lie. The truth is that the stimulus worked. At least most economists think so. http://www.usatoday.com/money/economy/2010-01-25-usa-today-economic-survey-obama-stimulus_N.htm According to that survey, the stimulus saved about 1.2 million jobs.

After several dishonest paragraphs bashing the stimulus, Roy finally gets around to actually proposing his own solution. It is a complete shocker too coming from a Republican. His answer - cut taxes.

I know, who would have guessed? But I wonder if he could explain then, why he voted against the almost $300 billion in tax cuts that were part of the stimulus? Funny how that works. He claims that tax cuts are the answer, but then he voted against them. I'd say that makes him a liar.

Of course, Blunt voted for the Republican alternative tax cuts. The ones that favored those with higher incomes. http://www.cbpp.org/cms/index.cfm?fa=view&id=2354

Higher-income households would get a much bigger tax cut than less-affluent ones. A married couple with two children with income of $100,000 or more would get a tax cut of $3,395. This is 17 times the $200 tax cut that the couple would receive if its income were $30,000.

The Tax Policy Center estimates that more than 47 million low- and moderate-income filers would receive no tax benefit at all from the proposal.<3> To receive even a partial tax cut, a married couple with two children would need income of more than $26,000.<4>

That's what Roy voted for, and then he voted against this

"In contrast, the “Making Work Pay” provision would provide a tax reduction of $500 per individual worker and $1,000 per couple to all workers earning at least $8,100 and would phase out at high income levels. As a result, people at high income levels would not receive much larger tax cuts than hard-pressed lower- and middle-income families."

So he voted FOR tax cuts for the RICH and AGAINST tax cuts for the MIDDLE CLASS.

In sum, Roy Blunt has no plan other than failed Bush policies. Roy Blunt is a liar, and Roy Blunt works for the rich and against the middle class.

Missouri should do better.
