Honorary Degree Today to Woman Who Was Denied Admission
This may not be playing in the other parts of the state but I thought you'd like it so I'm posting it.

Missouri State University will award its first-ever honorary undergraduate degree today to help right a 60-year old wrong.

Mary Jean (Price) Walls was the first African American applicant to the school in 1950.

However she was denied entry because of segregation.

The university is honoring Walls 60 years later to symbolize that everyone should have educational opportunities.

1. They had a piece of brown paper in the admissions office in the 60s
and if your skin was darker than the brown paper, you weren't admitted.

Many of my co-workers went to Mizzou or one of the other state universities. Several say they went to Lincoln because they were darker than the paper.

Glad to see an effort to make up for mistakes of the past.
