Immigration Action in downtown KC Mon April 28
Staff members and supporters of Catholic Worker houses
in the Midwest, including Holy Family (on 31st close
to Troost) and Shalom House (in KC KS at 13th and
Parallel) -- places that feed the hungry and give
shelter to the homeless -- have held a faith and
resistance meeting this weekend and are planning to do
CD concerning immigration issues at the Federal
Building in KC M0, Monday. 4/28. The group of about 40
persons (only about 4 to do CD) will meet at Ilus
Davis Park at 11th St. between Oak & Locust at about
8:30 a.m. and will proceed to the Federal Building at
12th St. and Locust.

The themes of the action will be "don't deport my
neighbor" and "no more deaths at the border" between
the U.S. and Mexico. Increasing numbers of immigrants
are dying as they try to journey, for example, through
desert areas and reach Tucson and then cities farther
north, and immigrants already in the heart of the
country are being deported and separated from family
members in the U.S.

The action will include about 40 persons who most
likely will not be arrested but will carry white
crosses with the name, age and cause of death of
persons who have died trying to cross Arizona desert
areas to reach cities and employment in the U.S. The
40 or so in the demonstration will fall to the ground,
representing the deaths of the immigrants. About four
people who will do CD will refuse to leave the Federal
Building outdoor plaza at the request of police and
will most likely be arrested.

The contact persons for the media are
Brother Louis Rodemann (from Holy Family) at
816-753-2677 and Brad Grabs (from Shalom House) at
913-321-2206.

Anti-civil rights leader recruited "extremist group," San Diego Minutemen, to help put anti-civil rights measure on the ballot in Missouri

Some people will stop at nothing to push their hate agenda -- even allying with known extremist group and the KKK. That's Ward Connerly in action.

Connerly, arguably one of the leading anti-civil rights in the country, has launched a multi-state effort to place anti-civil rights initiatives on the November ballot. The ballot gathering is facing a stiff legal challenge in Colorado, coincidentally a swing state this fall. Missouri, another key swing state in the fall, is also one of his targets.

Fired Up! Missouri has been monitoring and exposing Connerly's antics.

Connerly's crew has been trying to mislead Missouri voters for months. Lately, he's had to redouble his efforts by calling for help from the Minutemen, the anti-immigrant vigilantes, who are based in San Diego. The Southern Poverty Law Center's Hatewatch has been keeping an eye on the Minutemen and their ties to white supremacists. The SPLC refers to the Minutemen as "the nativist extremist group." Need we say more?

A couple weeks ago, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch blasted Connerly's effort to bring "carpetbaggers" into the state to gather signatures. All of this plays out against the deceptive tactics Connerly's crew has used to gather signatures. (And, as our friends at Think Progress pointed out in 2006, the Ku Klux Klan is a welcome ally in Connerly's efforts. Not kidding.)

The folks in Missouri who are fighting Connerly's efforts aren't backing down and are doing the work every day to expose his deception. We'll know next week if the initiative makes the ballot. But, every step Connerly takes is met with fierce resistance.

That's one reason I love the progressives in that state. They do hand-to-hand combat every day. They know how to fight. Campaigns across the country should recruit progressive political activists from Missouri. If they can win there, they can win almost anywhere.
