We have a HUGE battle on our hands, folks.
Unless you want to see the show me state become the next South Dakota. That idiot Crowell from Cape Gir is at it again. Now he wants to ban abortion:

2. It says there is a referendum clause.
That didn't work out so well for us in 2004 with the anti-gay constitutional amendment.

8. they brought the issue of a constitutional amendment
before the voters in August 2004 (they wanted it in November, so they could draw as many fundies to the polls as possible) - and the thing passed.

So, now, the Missouri Constitution bans gay marriage in the state.

10. So this means the voters will decide
instead of the legislature.

Man, how many referendums are they going to have on that ballot? This is the third that I am aware of.

4. This has turned into a Republican weakness
The abortion ban bill scares Blunt. He was caught between anti-choicers and stem-cell research last year. No way does he want both on the ballot this year.
Crowell is at least as big an idiot as Blunt. If those two are at odds, the Republican party may be in real trouble.....

Blunt, who has supported other efforts to restrict abortions, said, "I’m not convinced it’s necessary" to pass a general abortion ban.

"I think we need to really focus on the legislation that will reduce the number of abortions in our state - not just set up court battles," he said.

Crowell said that he hopes his measure becomes law and that a challenge reaches the U.S. Supreme Court.

"The time has come for us to outlaw abortion. The time has come for these decisions to be made in these deliberative bodies, not by nine men and women who wear black robes," said Crowell, R-Cape Girardeau.

That said, Missourians need to be very aware of state politics this year, lest we go the way of S.D.

7. Crowell letter in St Louis paper
http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/editorialcommentary/story/9925076FA1DC2BC18625712B001EEBA9?OpenDocument

Its the second story down -

Note his last paragraph: his intent is to get this issue on the November ballot. Obviously, to get the pro-lifers to the polls, and vote for Republicans while they are there.

On banning abortion

Today the Missouri Legislature is pro-life, but that might not be the case tomorrow. Therefore, pro-life legislators must vote now to protect unborn life.

Does this not make sense to anyone besides me?

Nine other states are moving legislation forward that protects unborn life. The South Dakota Legislature passed legislation banning abortion, and the governor recently signed it. A similar measure is advancing in Mississippi. Kansas, Ohio, Indiana, Georgia, Tennessee, West Virginia and Kentucky also are considering similar legislation. My question is simple: Does Missouri want to remain the Show-Me state or become the Wait-and-See state?

Kansas? Funny this is the first I hear of that and I live in Kansas

I have introduced in the Missouri Senate legislation that would outlaw abortion. Senate Bill 1248 would ban all abortions in Missouri unless the procedure is necessary to save the life of the mother. Senate Joint Resolution 43 would establish constitutionally for Missouri a policy that protects "the life of an unborn child from conception until birth." If the legislation is passed by the Legislature, the issue would be placed on the November ballot, giving Missourians the chance to decide whether or not to protect unborn life.

We already know that MO doesn't care to protect born life since they took health care away from 100,000 Missourians

My legislation gives Missouri voters the say on whether the state should protect the sanctity of unborn life. This is a decision that voters should be able to make for themselves come this November. The issue really is that simple.

Yep gotta get them church going voters to the polls in November!!

State Sen. Jason Crowell | Cape Girardeau

INTRODUCED BY REPRESENTATIVES HENKE(D) (Sponsor), WAGNER(D), HARRIS(D) (110), McGHEE(R),
SANDER(R), MEADOWS(D) AND CUNNINGHAM(R)(86) (Co-sponsors).

13. It's a different bill
Edited on Thu Mar-09-06 02:38 AM by loyalsister
The bill I posted was sponsored by a House Democrat.
I was also referring to this phenomenon....

"The Missouri House of Representatives, in its nearly unanimous wisdom, passed 152-1 a waiver on sales taxes for purchasers of any motor vehicle made in Missouri.

Even if the tax incentive would encourage an automaker to remain in Missouri, why should these businesses receive this kind of favorable treatment with public tax money? Every company operating in Missouri produces jobs and state revenue. For lawmakers to give a special tax break to a particular category is selective bribery, a form of tax policy manipulation that should be illegal."

I agree with the columnist on this. Corporate welfare.
Beyond that, a waiver of a high end sales tax is in effect a waiver of a luxury tax.
It's shameful.

15. Does that mean that GWB, and "Shotgun" Cheney, and...
the Missouri GOP could be indicted and prosecuted in Missouri, for the early termination and abortion of a perfectly viable Constitutional Democracy in the State of Missouri ??

Or, would we have to settle with some cheap misdemeanor charge like "Malicious Miscarriage of Justice" ??.
Then they could only be sent to "Boy's Town". Nahhh, they would like that too much.

And can't somebody down by the Mississippi River grab that pencil-necked Jason Crowell by the throat some night, and hold him under until he emits some "bodily emission function" noises that differ from the ones he has been known to make on the legislature floor? <VBG>

Seriously, the GOP should think twice. Those long knives they are sharpening, and drawing out, have been known to cut both ways.

House rejects spending for birth control

By DAVID A. LIEB
Associated Press Writer

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- An attempt to resume state spending on birth control got shot down Wednesday by House members who argued it would have amounted to an endorsement of promiscuous lifestyles.
