Our first McDonald County Democrats Club meeting

Well here we go, after two years of living here my husband and I are preparing to attend our very first McDonald County Democrats Club meeting. While we have consistently voted with our party, we have yet to become involved in a more organized group. What will we find? Being smack dab in the middle of not only the bible belt but red country , we have no idea what to expect. A sure bet that we will stick out like sore thumbs, being Native American in a predominantly white county, I am trying to overcome the childhood memories of racism that first motivated me to leave this place. I am convinced that there must be open minded people here. After all, when my husband and I got married in a traditional Cherokee wedding ceremony on our property, none of our neighbors treated us any differently (despite the fact that most in the bible belt view Native ceremonies as pagan ritual). They just pulled right up on their tractors and introduced themselves. They seemed genuinely interested in our culture. So maybe it will not be that bad. Wish us luck in finding others here to talk to.

SW Missouri. We border OK, and AR. last county in the sw part. This county went for bush big time in the last election. I believe over 7000 people voted for W, and 1500 voted for kerry, very lopsided here, but my wife, TurtleLowe, and I are going to our first meeting tomorrow night.

Looks like McDonald County is in Roy Blunt's district. Check out Draft Kreider for US Congress if you haven't. And hey, if your neighboring Lawrence County can buck recent tradition and elect a Democrat to the state House (as they just did), maybe McDonald County can do similar things.

4. Yes, Roy Blunt country....

Our meeting tonight was different, it wasn't what I was expecting at all. First off, most of the fifty people there were over the age of 60, i swear, all of them were grandmas or granpas. I was expecting a bunchy of 30-55 yr olds...my wife and i had to be the two youngest at the meeting. The meeting was good, reminded me of church a little, a lot of people just talking, and milling around. NO real business was dicussed, just some donation stuff, to donate money to certain graduating high schoolers, and sponsoring other sports events, to get the democratic club name out there....other than that, it was a nice quiet meeting. My wife and I are planning on going again next month....I didn't pay any dues or donate money tonight, i'm testing the waters a bit first...:)
