presiding commissioner info?
I live in one of those counties where the repubs hold almost every office, but we have a great dem candidate who is going to run for presiding commissioner.

I'm helping with the campaign, and I'd like to see if we can gain some traction with a new issue of some sort. I don't have a clear enough understanding of the job duties and laws to come up with a good angle. I was looking at issues that other people ran on in other counties, and found things like revisions of land codes (I wouldn't even know where to begin with that one). I did find an example where someones platform involved forming a coalition where the goal was to preserve and protect communities, parks, and local history. I'm not sure our communities and parks are being threatened, but the current commissioners did have some local history displays removed from the courthouse as part of some remodeling thing they implemented.

Does anyone here have a clear enough understanding of the presiding commissioner job to help me think of some good campaign issues or angles? Thanks for any help you can give!

2. thank you very much for your reply
I guess what I'm actually doing is trying to brainstorm some issues that would make a good platform. Right now the repubs hold nearly every political office in the county. There has been plenty of corruption and mismanagement, but I don't think it's been offensive enough for people to vote them out. I did a little homework and found a few instances where commissioners in other areas ran on environmental or preservation issues that struck me as being original ideas. I don't think environment or preservation would work here unless we found the exact right angle, but I do think we're going to need some sort of 'outside the traditional' issue to actually win.

My main problem is, I'm not familiar enough with the job of commissioner to be able to see issue possibilities beyond the obvious. I really do think we have a great candidate who would do a good and honest job for the county, but I think being the best man for the job isn't enough here. Any issues or ideas that might give us an edge in the election would be greatly appreciated, and thanks again for your response!

3. Well, one of the first things in line
is how big is the county? The size and assessed valuation have a large bearing on what the job entails. Most commissioners in larger counties are full time, and they have a little different duty than the ones in these small counties.

Location, location, location...where is it at? Southern and Central MO have more issues to deal with than the other parts of the state.

4. thank you again for your assistance..
We're in central Missouri and the county population here is about 40,000, with a land mass of 2000 square miles. If I'm looking at the right numbers, our assessed value is about 400,000,000. My very uninformed impression of the job description here has always been that they're responsible for bridges and whatever work is done to county roads, but I'm thinking mine is probably a very simplistic view.

I really appreciate your time. Thanks again.
