Pit bull attacks, kills 3-year-old in Jackson
Source: Clarian Ledger - Mississippi

"A chained pit bull attacked and killed a 3-year-old boy Tuesday night in south Jackson.

Jackson police would not identify the toddler.

The mauling happened about 9 p.m. while the child played outside with friends at 112 Maple Ridge Drive across the street from his home."

The attack occurred when the boy wandered from the front yard into the carport where the dog was, Scott said. As the child made the corner toward the back of the house, he met the dog face-to-face."

Nice dog. Nice parents. I want to throw up.

1. I don't
understand the fascination with big powerful dogs that are capable of killing a person.

2. Not a pit bull fan....
but large dogs are good for watching a property and/or family. Rottweilers and Malamutes are better choices though.

4. Standard poodles and labradors are better choices than any "guard" dog.
Any large dog will scare people away. But too many guard dogs have bitten innocent people.

I personally know a brought-up-with-children, carefully trained, "gentle" female malamute that surprised everyone one day by biting a 5 year old girl in the face (who was doing nothing but laughing within a group of children). Dogs that are bred to be "guard dogs" can have a vicious streak that can emerge without any warning. Any dog can -- but guard dogs that are bred to be aggressive are the most likely.

3. All Dogs Have The Capability Of Being Loving Companions
It just depends on the owners and whether they devote the time to proper training or decide to neglect the dog and keep it tied up. People that can't properly train should not own... poor child; hopefully the parents have learned from the situation and have taken measures so this does not occur (Assuming they don't euthanize the dog :( )

5. Guard dogs are bred to be more aggressive. Pit bulls specifically are bred
to be fighters, and their jaws are extremely strong.

They are a special risk, no matter what the training.

This dog killed a 3 year old. He damn well should be euthanized.

6. I definitely disagree...
My dog, Ginger, is a Rhodesian Ridgeback, Great Dane, Pit Bull mix. I have had her since she was 10 weeks old and have, in no way, bred her to attack. She does love to, however, graze on the grass in our backyard and chase flies around...

:silly:

7. You didn't breed her to attack. But breeders of Ridgebacks and Pit Bulls
do favor aggressive dogs.

And this one has killed a child. What justification can there be for allowing this dog an opportunity to kill another?

8. Nowhere did the article state they were breeding for aggressiveness, but
even if the owners were breeding for aggressiveness, then I feel the responsiblity still totally falls on the owners behalf. The dog should not be killed because of irresponsible owners; the dog should definitely be removed from that environment and allowed a chance to show its true colors. Seriously... would you be a happy camper if you were tied up to a carport with nobody around? Who knows how long that dog was tied up... and the big question remains... Where were the parents?

10. ignorance . dobermans german sheperards , rotts, now pits
see I hate ignorance , I own no pit or dog at all but I do study them.

One Does this particular need to die ? yes it attacked and should be put down.

Now the breed as a whole is a smaller stocky dog yes bred to attack and fight other dogs. It is also bred to be friendly to humans because they have to be willing to obey even in the heat of battle.
That is why pit bulls are poor guard dogs .

they are descended from good guard dogs and much bigger dogs the mastiffs ( english estate guardians ) and terriers (which are hunters) .
Pitt bulls have been around for ever and have had np reall issues until the underground fighting scene be came big in the "urban" culture dogs are bred and and trained irresponsibly . We have all grown up with sweet loving pit bulls .. ex Petey the dog from the little rascals .
No one remembers that ?

Now the true culprits here is the dog at fault? probably not the three year old was in his area and probably did not realize the signs the dog was giving him . The child ? no he was exploreing and learning like children have to do to develop fully. No one seems to care about the three year old out side of the house being neglected by the adults. these are the people clearly responsible for the murder of a child .

the child would have probably died being hit by a car or something else with the adults that were responsible for him . DO NOT BLAME THE ANIMAL

9. Don't blame the parents of the boy. The owner of the dog and two family
members were supposed to be watching the boy.

http://www.wsoctv.com/news/16964325/detail.html

The family of a 3-year-old boy mauled to death by a pit bull wants the dog put down.

Tony Evans Jr. was killed after he wandered close to a chained pit bull on Tuesday at a home at 112 Maple Ridge Drive, according to the boy’s uncle Ray Powell. The dog was able to reach Evans and bit him in the abdomen.

Powell said that the dog’s owner and two family members were watching the boy Tuesday evening.

During a news conference on Wednesday, Assistant Police Chief Gerald Jones said that the boy’s parents and the owner of the dog had been questioned, but that it was not a criminal matter.
