89.3 The Current - Very Good Progressive Rock Station
If you haven't check out 89.3 The Current and are into Alternative/Progressive Rock I highly suggest giving a listen

http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/services/thecurrent/
Some people may still be upset about losing the classical format that used to be on this station. I personally love it... it was one of the reasons I cancelled my XM subscription.

You can listen live over the Internet(s)

2. Is Bill Kling trying to kill KFAI and RadioK?
Just asking.

5. Community radio station that plays eclectic music and blues
www.kfai.org

And part of the IPR, Independent Public Radio ( http://www.ampers.org/ ), that is not part of Bill Kling's empire of corporate public radio.

KFAI and RadioK both have Internet feeds, if I'm not mistaken.

8. The supposed "inadequacy" of KFAI is that it has a lot of
non-music programming, much of which is in (gasp) foreign languages.

However, I'm hoping that KFAI will be kept alive by the progressive community. As for Radio K, if it's still a U student station, it should stick around for years as part of the student activities budget.

I listen to 89.3 when I'm in the car (it's good driving music), but I'm still mourning WCAL, home of Performance Today, From the Top, and Evening Song.

12. KFAI seems to have a fairly small range...
I used to listen to it at work in Minneapolis, but I can't pick up the station in Arden Hills.

I love Radio K, but the sign-off at sunset gets pretty old, especially in the winter (4:30 ! ). The reception is not that great here, also.

The Current offers something different than KFAI and Radio K. I don't see it as a threat to those stations.

9. Another good community radio station is
Edited on Wed Mar-02-05 05:10 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
KBOO-FM ("kay-boo") in Portland, Oregon. Not surprisingly, one of its biggest fundraisers is a massive Halloween party known as the Boo Ball.

http://www.kboo.org

It has left-wing talk from 7:30-9:00 AM Pacific Time (9:30-11:00 for us Central folks).

10. What about........?
Am 1280 or Am 1500?

Hehe kidding.

I honesly have never heard of 90% of the bands on the current. KAFI has a late night metal show that I listen to once in a while.

11. I like the station
since it first went on air. I am taking a week off from listening to it online until next week. Even though I am a MPR member, I am going to other music options until next week until the spring fundraising is over.

13. I love it!
I became a "Founding Member" yesterday.

I also liked WCAL and think it's too bad that we can't have both, however The Current plays the (non-classical) music that I listen to, both old and new. I love hearing the occasional punk gem from late '70's (ok, I'm a tiny, tiny bit nostalgic!) and also having my interest in obscure current bands satisfied.

They won me over when they played Komeda, T-Rex, Bad Plus, Steve Earle, Stereolab, Frank Black, Iggy Pop, X (!), The Streets, The Hives, Bjork, Sam and Dave, George Clinton, Atmosphere, Libertines, Hank Williams (Sr.), The Pixies, Parliment, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Badly Drawn Boy and The Shins. And I'm hearing new things, especially singer-songwriter stuff that I normally wouldn't listen to.

What a great station!
