**URGENT** What just happed to the sky in the western suburbs?
Edited on Wed Nov-12-08 10:42 PM by AllHereTruth
For about 5 seconds the sky above the Plymouth area as ILLUMINATED with BRIGHT blue/purple/red lights.

It changed color from one to the other to the other. I am not messing around, it was the most amazing sight i have ever seen.

did anyone else see this phenomenon, and any ideas what happed???

*note i heard a low flying plane after the lights stopped...*

EDIT: 9:35pm cst: it was nothing like an aurora, it was ILLUMINATED through out the entire sky.

2. Was it dark out when this happened?

At night planes fly with multi-colored lights on, and when they get in the clouds and the lights reflect off the clouds it can look quite impressive.

3. If the sky was overcast with low clouds, then it could be a reflection of light from the ground.
Red and blue lights sounds like it could be reflection off of low clouds from a bunch of police cars with their flashers on. The fact that the lights lasted for only five seconds suggests that they were moving quickly.

If the sky was clear, then that suggestion doesn't work.

It seems unlikely to have been an airplane. Airplanes don't normally show bright blue, purple, and red lights. They display a green light on the right wing tip, a red light on the left wing tip, and a white light on the tail. They will also have a red rotating beacon or flashing white strobe mounted on the top of the tail or on the top and/or bottom of the fuselage. Planes are also equipped with landing lights similar to a car's headlights.

You don't describe the condition of the sky at the time.
