Lets get a Kerry convoy together!!!
Edited on Mon Oct-11-04 03:45 PM by MinnesotaMike31
Anyone else up for putting together a convoy of vehicles & driving through town during a rush hour before election day? We could use dress up our vehicles with pro-Kerry stuff.

Anyone up for this?

1. I think the word you want to use is "convoy"
10-4?

3. Good idea!!!!
I've been thinking in terms of a local rally but the convoy (oy-vey) is a great idea.

5. Hmmm...what might be more effective

would be to pick an overpass or some other place and wave our Kerry/Edwards signs. Much as I like the idea of a convoy it's kind of limiting because you won't be seen by all that many people -- just the drivers right around you while you're sitting in traffic. The sign wavers always elicit honks and cheers. (Well, except from the * supporters.) Plus it looks good for our candidates that we're out there actively supporting them. It gets the base fired up and might motivate others to get out there and do some sign-waving themselves.

Then there's always the freeway blogging thing. Does anybody have any idea of what the MN rules are regarding non-commercial signs on state and federal property?

There is some helpful info on how to get the rules for MN at the following site but if anyone knows the rules offhand please feel free.

6. I was wondering about waving a big sign over some of the bridges
over I-94 and 35-W and 35-E. Wondered whether one needs a permit for this.

As we were walking toward the Maple Grove HS yesterday, we - and many otters - parked several blocks away on city streets. A pickup truck stopped by and asked who were all the people - thought that there was a football star, or something. Then he added that some with a Kerry Edwards signs stood at some street corners and were shooed by the police.

So I wondered whether one needs a permit for any public expression of political opinion.

7. I saw the sign wavers yesterday

along Highway 81 and at the corner of 81 and Fernbrook. I'm not sure when or where the people were shooed away but if it was by the police, it may have been a saftey thing. If you're on a corner and obstructing the vision of the drivers that may be an issue. Being too close to traffic might also present a problem as far as safety is concerned. I think WAMM (Women Against Military Madness) still holds weekly protest on the Lake Street Bridge so maybe we should check with them. I'm guessing that as long as you're standing on a sidewalk (away from a corner) and not causing any traffic and/or safety problems you're OK. Then again, I could be wrong on that. Unlike Dubya, I've been wrong before and I'm willing to admit it. ;)

Oops. Forgot to add. Waving and/or draping a sign over a bridge should be done INSIDE the fencing. If a sign was hung on the outside it could present a hazard to traffic if it were to fall off. If you're holding it, make sure to maintain a good grip at all times and back away from the fencing a bit, just in case.

9. I'm up for either,
but would prefer the overpass thingy.

If we pick a pedestrian overpass there is little the police can do. There are plenty of pedestrian overpasses over I-94 and I-35.

10. As I recall, the Kucinich campaign did some freeway overpass bannering
right near the 35W and I-94 mess.

12. There is a pedestrian bridge over 694
in Brooklyn Center which is ripe for two big signs at least. I think there are at least 4 lanes of traffic in each direction in that area. Lots of communters to and from the northwest corridor.
