Sabo signed on to H Res 635 yesterday! Let's encourage McCollum
So far Oberstar and Sabo are among the 27 co-sponsors of H Res 635 creating a committee to investigate possible impeachable offenses. I've contacted Betty several times over the past few weeks and last night her staff person seemed convinced. This would be a great time to call or email her office. Let's get a third MN rep on the list of co-sponsors!

1. Yes. Impeachment comes from the people, not Congress.
From a post by choie in GD: Politics

And yet if I may be so bold, I think the 'breakout' star of the evening wasn't our current beloved
congressman, as much as he kicked ass. For me, it was former representative Elizabeth Holtzman who really
shone brightest. Maybe it was just a surprise for me, since as much as I always liked her, I'm too young to
have seen her at the height of her career. But she provided the MOST important message of the night: that
as impatient as we all are with the wimpos in Congress and wondering why they're not impeaching the president
NOW, the fact is that impeachment isn't gonna come from them. It's the people who really have to impeach
the president.

Let me explain. First, she reminded us that Nixon's downfall and impeachment hearings weren't caused by
Congress. (Congress was relatively slow to act after Watergate, she pointed out.) To the contrary: they were
caused because the PEOPLE demanded impeachment hearings. The people were disgusted by Archibald Cox's firing
that they finally said ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! and the outcry pushed a reluctant congress into action. Even though
the impeachment vote never went through, the public demand for justice brought Nixon to his knees.

She pointed out that we should look at the other recent impeachment as an example of how NOT to bring down a
president. Clinton's impeachment, though it was voted through in the House, didn't cause his downfall. Why?
Because it was artificially induced. The people of the USA never thought his so-called crime rose to the
level of impeachment in the first place. It was the Repugs who initiated the whole mess for purely political
purposes, and politics alone aren't enough to destroy a popular, capable president in the eyes of the US
citizens.

So the message for us is that we can't sit on our hands waiting for congress to shake off the fear of being
called unpatriotic, as Conyers warned. We can't hope for the largesse of the Repugs in allowing a Select
Committee to take place. God knows we can't count on the media remembering what journalistic integrity is to
put the politicians' feet to the fire. WE have the power, and we need to wield it. That means emailing,
writing, calling, hell even harassing our representatives on the sidewalk if necessary (that suggestion was
from Michael Ratner, not me!). It means demonstrating and screaming at the top of our lungs. It means sending
money and volunteering and registering voters and monitoring ballot boxes and in short doing everything
possible to get Democrats elected in '06.

According to the post, the case for impeachment is solid but it's probably not going to happen without us. If we want Dubya impeached, we need to contact our Representatives and let them know it. It probably wouldn't hurt to tell them to throw out Cheney, Rumsfeld, Condi, etc. in the process because they are ALL just as guilty as Dubya. So, contact your Congresspeeps and tell them to impeach the entire lot. Then contact other people's Congresspeeps and tell them to impeach the entire lot. Then contact entirely random Congresspeeps and tell them to impeach the entire lot. OK, I think you get the idea. ;)
