Michele Bachmann draws 70% of campaign $$$ from outside her district
Michele Bachmann's 6th Congressional District campaign continues to be bankrolled by wealthy individuals who can't even vote for her. More than 70 percent of the itemized contributions to Bachmann's campaign coffers have come from people outside the 6th CD...

1. That's a bit unscrupled for her to do. But then, she's a career politician
and of course it's for the fat cats. Politics is not about people. Not anymore.

2. She is disgusting.....
Someone has told her to stay out of the news .... especially since she was dumped from her position within the minority.

3. If I could rewrite the campaign finance laws
one of the things I would do is only allow contributions from individuals who could actually vote for the candidate with a limit on how much an individual could contribute. (Step two would be outlawing PACS).

4. Rowley
Not a surprise. That's much worse that the 68% Colleen Rowley gets from out of her district. Unless you take out the $4,000 her husband gave, then Rowley is at 71% out of her district.

7. Source?
I don't actually doubt your numbers, I'm just wondering where they came from.

8. FEC
I got them from fec.gov. You have to do the math yourself but all of the numbers are there.

6. good catch, but this is frequently a bipartisan problem
I'm going to guess that not each and every one of our favorite Dems has a completely homegrown warchest. In the case of Bachman, this is just one more reason to wish that her inevitable journey to a padded cell somewhere would proceed a little more quickly. However, we need to be careful about getting caught in a pot / kettle situation.

Full disclosure: I have donated (very) small amounts to candidates I couldn't vote for - Ms. Wetterling in her valiant challenge to Mr. Screech Kennedy in 2004, among others. I live in one of the bluest districts of a blue city in a blue (and getting bluer) state.

9. The money chase is bad for all parties
"However, we need to be careful about getting caught in a pot / kettle situation."

If it's a problem for Republicans, it's a problem for Democrats, and they should be called on it as well. No one should be elected to Congress with more than twice the financial support from outside their district as from within. That's just bad politics.

In Bachmann's case, we aren't talking about "very small amounts" flowing in from outside the 6th CD. In almost all cases to date, we're talking individual contributions in the 100s or 1000s of dollars.
