The former Methodist minister has gotten the national backing despite views on social issues that put him to the right of his party. He opposes legalized abortion, supports a constitutional ban on gay marriage and opposes increased restrictions on gun ownership.

"There's a sense among Democrats that the person who wins this seat will have to come from a more conservative background," said Tinklenberg, a former mayor of Blaine.

Right, Elwyn, and you remember how well that platform worked for Janet Robert in 2002, who described herself as a "Dixiecrat."

If the DFL is going to get behind candidates like Tinklenberg, who thumb their noses at the DFL platform, why do they bother going through the charade of precinct caucuses, resolutions (remember those things that used to determine the party's platform?), candidate screening, etc. Get those pesky citizens out of the way and just let the Washington consultants and DNCC pick your candidates instead.

2. Yeah, citizens have very little to say about who makes the first cut

While the Washington DC Dems decide who they'll support and then start funding them so no one else has a fair chance, it's even more streamlined for the Republicans. Rove or Cheney simply annoints them and they're in.

Really, what role do citizens play in elections anymore?

Oh yeah, we get to choose between who Cheney/Rove picks for the Repugs and the DCCC picks for the Dems.
