Camp will battle Campbell in 4th Congressional District

Democrat Jerry M. Campbell, 53, serves as supervisor of Roscommon County’s Richfield Township. He’s undaunted by the prospect of facing Camp, a 10-term congressman, in the November general election. “I think we need a change in the 4th District,” Campbell said. “My opponent seems to vote straight party line all the time.”

He opposes past Republican drives to privatize Social Security, which Camp has advocated. “Anybody’s who’s watched the 401(k) system knows that’s a bad idea,” Campbell said.

Campbell opposes trade pacts such as the North American Free Trade Agreement. The one-time autoworker notes he worked at a GM factory in Flint to earn money to pay for his education at Michigan State University. The former A.C. Spark Plug factory was demolished and much of the production sent out of the country.

Campbell supports extending unemployment benefits and tighter regulations on financial institutions in the aftermath of the Wall Street taxpayer-funded bailout. Camp voted for the first bailout to prop up the nation’s economy and financial system from collapse.

1. How sad he probably doesn't stand a chance.
Though my guess is he's got plenty of labor support. Still, Camp is the epitome of safe.

2. perhaps we could get some grass roots going here.
having been gerrymandered into this district many years ago, I also see the blood red make up of this district. However I was thinking we could play off the anti-incumbent emotions. The facts that Camp voted for the wall street bailout and against the main street bailout would help. I sent Camp a question asking if he had done anything to procure any of these funds to help the hard pressed working people in his district. He sent back a one page response denouncing the Democrats for ramming things through congress. Camp has millions in corporate money in his campaign account. Camp voted against the s-chip law. One of the reasons he sent to me was his concern about paying for this. He was concerned about an increase in the tobacco tax ! If we could get this information in the minds of the common folk in district 4, perhaps we could make a run for it.

3. All Right , since first posting on this topic
I have volunteered to be Jerry's treasurer. I met with Jerry and his wife Pam last week. Both are fine people with good hearts and good intentions. I am enthused about this race but we need help. Jerry is still looking for a campaign manager, I am sure there are qualified individuals out there who could fill this position. Jerry does have union support but this district is anti-union if anything. Jerry could use someone to work on his web page. I am still working toward an anti-incumbent grass roots movement but cannot do this alone. If you support Progressive Democratic values and live or know someone in this district please volunteer.
Thank you

4. Has anyone been in touch with the District Dems
or the 14 county parties? That is step one. They know who all the activists are and might be able to help out.
