We are going to be up there at the end of July and would like to meet some of you if possible. We will have some free time too. Let me know if there is anything that we should definitely try to do while we are there.

1. I'm in Auburn Hills
Edited on Sun Jun-10-07 07:58 AM by notadmblnd
there's the chrysler Museum, but I haven't been there myself. and of course there's the Palace and meadowbrook where you might catch a show. If it's night life you want, downtown Pontiac has a few clubs. other than that, you might want to take a side trip to detroit, they have the casinos and Greektown, Eastern market and of course there's tons of beaches. If you're going to St. Ignance, you have a lot of fun. there's Mackinaw Island, The Mystery spot, Fort Michimiliac (spelling?) you'll have a great time here. Hopefully we won't be in the middle of several humidity festivals we have here.

2. Well, I'm about 12 miles south of Auburn Hills in Royal Oak
There're several DUers hereabouts.

About the only thing I could think of as close to a 'must see' would be the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village west of Detroit, depending on whether your interests are Americana/historical or not.

4. I'm not far from TahitiNut and could be up for a meetup,

depending on where and when. We could meet somewhere on Woodward between Royal Oak and Pontiac. Any ideas, Tahiti? Maybe we could get some other DUers from the nearby areas, too.

5. Upstairs at Duggan's is always a good bet on a nice day.

Mr. B's sidewalk tables are nice, too. (Can you tell that I like sunshine and fresh air?)

Too bad 'irkthesmirk' isn't visiting on Saturday, August 18 ... the Dream Cruise.

6. Either of those would be good, but
it's awfully noisy upstairs at Duggans most of the time. If we want to be able to actually hear each other, Mr. B's might be a better spot -- either inside or out. Royal Oak is nice and centrally located -- maybe we could get Mrs.G, Patsy and livvy to come from St. Clair Shores. lwfern lives over that way, too, I think. Herb Brown has come to a few rallies, so I think he's nearby.

3. If you're headed from Auburn Hills to St Ignace
You'll be going right past me in Saginaw. Let me know exact dates -- I could meet some of y'all at Auburn Hills (it's a bit over an hour from here).

7. Sorry I can't make FUNDAY
Edited on Mon Jun-11-07 04:27 PM by JNelson6563
I'm on the go all week for politics (missing three dinners this week already!) and Saturday's the first day I'll have at home with family all week. Otherwise I'd love to go but I don't dare risk iciting mutiny.;-)

I hope it's a fabulous time for all, I'm sure it will be! :toast:

8. Hi everybody, thanks for all of your suggestions.
We are supposed to be in St.Ignace from the 7th through the 14th and Auburn Hills from the 19th-21st then we are heading to Florida by way of Virginia. Try to figure out a day or a time that would work for the most people. I'm looking forward to it!

I think I'm okay either the 19th or the 20th.

10. Hi everybody! I have an update on our travel plans
We will be in Auburn Hills on Thursday the 19th through Saturday the 21st. I will be available on Saturday if anyone will be around. I can travel if there is some place you all might want to meet. Post suggestions here and we will see if we can make some kind of arrangements. Sorry about the late notice. I've been in the U.P. for the past week without access to the Internet (other than short trips to the Burger King or Super 8 parking lots! Hope to hear from you soon!

12. Maybe we could put together a meetup somewhere on Woodward Ave.
up in Bloomfield Hills or the Birmingham or Royal Oak area sometime Saturday. It's only about 15-20 minutes from where you are and pretty central to others of us. I think TahitiNut had suggested something a while back.

Anytime late Saturday afternoon or evening would work for me.

15. Late Saturday afternoon or evening is good for me too.
I can drive 20 minutes or so, if necessary. Whatever works the best for most people will probably be fine. I am also free Friday during the day if that is better,

If we do something Saturday night would you be too exhausted to drive here?

16. If we do something Saturday night, it will have to be early. We're driving back to Va. on Sunday
and we'll probably leave pretty early.

I have no idea how many people we could pull together that quickly, since we haven't heard from many here.

I'm going to start a separate thread and see if it attracts any attention.

11. I'm in Warren, about 15 miles from Auburn Hills
There is a lot to do in the Detroit area. The Henry Ford museum in Dearborn is always good. Great Lakes Crossing is the big mall out in Auburn Hills. I advise against swimming in Lake St. Clair (fecal coliform levels can close beaches, yuck), but there are good inland swimming lakes, like at Stony Creek Metropark. When you are in St. Ignace, either of the big Lakes are good (but cold).

If you are adventurous and want to explore Detroit, there are some cool things to see. The Heidleburg project is an outdoor art exhibit on Heidleburg Street, south of Mack off of Mt. Elliot. The Detroit Institute of the Arts is closed this summer for remodeling, but there is a art-themed mini-golf course set up on the lawn for the kiddies. The museum of African-American history is pretty cool. Greektown has several restaurants, all of which are pretty good, and a casino, if you are interested in that sort of thing.

on a Sunday, catch a church service with some good music: The Winans family's church is called The Perfecting Church and is located on Van Dyke and Nevada. The Greater Grace Temple on 7 Mile near Telegraph also has an awesome gospel choir. Or, come to my church, Renaissance Unity, on the 696 service drive between Van Dyke and Hoover, in Warren.
