Brockton Aquaria desalination plant violates drinking water standard for bacteria

BROCKTON —

The Aquaria desalination plant, which sends drinking water to parts of Brockton, violated a federal standard for coliform bacteria, according to a statement from the company on Tuesday.

The violation happened in October, but the company has 30 days to inform consumers of the problem, said Aquaria plant manager Linda Correia.

“People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk,” the announcement said.

Water from the Aquaria plant is drawn from the mouth of the Taunton River in Dighton. The plant now supplies about 1.5 million gallons per day to the city, most of which flows into homes and businesses on the West Side.

The city pays about $4 million each year under a 20-year contract with Aquaria signed in 2002, with the payments scheduled to increase each year regardless of whether the city uses the water.

Thanks again, Jim Harrington!
