WEB EXTRA / Brockton Mayor James Harrington wins re-election

BROCKTON -- James E. Harrington won a second term as mayor in today's city election, defeating challenger Jass Stewart after a hard-fought campaign.

Harrington received 7,873 votes to Stewart's 7,146, for a margin of victory of 52 percent to 47 percent. (There were 69 write-in votes as well).

The 59-year-old mayor and city business man stressed his experience and background in finance during the campaign. Stewart, 44, who has never held political office and also lost to Harrington in 2005, had criticized the mayor on issues such as crime, education and a proposal by a company to build a power plant in Brockton, which Stewart accused Harrington of supporting.

Two years ago, Harrington beat Stewart by a vote tally of 7,432 to 5,852.

Let's see how they like Harrington when we don't have the money to plow the snow off our streets, yet we have millions of dollars to give away to forgive the debt Harrington's chronies owed to the city.
