Power plant proposal reignites fight. Proposal back after 9 years

The newest product coming out of the Cindy's Kitchen salad dressing plant in Brockton has been "Stop the Power Plant" signs, and Ed Byers, the owner, wants everyone to have one. Even residents at a senior high-rise in neighboring West Bridgewater have been getting them, joining the latest opposition to a proposed power plant they say would be too close to their neighborhood.

<snip>

On a local radio program, Byers has debated a former mayor who supports the project. Opponents have crowded public hearings and sent letters to state agencies during a public comment period. And the issue has become the dominant topic in the mayor's race, with challenger Jass Stewart, who opposes the plant, calling on Mayor James E. Harrington to take a stance.

<snip>

The power plant would be built on a 13-acre site in the 70-plus acre Oak Hill Way Industrial Park, and would be a 350-megawatt, natural gas-powered facility. It would use diesel fuel during cold snaps, or when natural gas is limited.

<snip>

Stewart has made the plant a key issue in his bid to unseat Harrington, the incumbent mayor. A power plant should not be situated in a neighborhood, maintains Stewart.
