Brockton students told to remove or cover T-shirts honoring Brockton slaying victim
By Mike Underwood, Enterprise staff writer

BROCKTON — A student walked out of school in protest after teachers told her to change the shirt she was wearing in memory of shooting victim John Lima.

She claims she was one of a number of students who left school Wednesday after being told to remove or cover the T-shirts worn out of respect for 18-year-old Lima, who was buried Tuesday.

But school Principal Sue Szachowicz said students were banned from displaying the shirts for safety reasons.

“We did not allow the kids to wear the shirts because some of them had gang symbols on them, which is against the school dress code,” said Szachowicz.

“This is not a First Amendment rights issue. This is about safety in school. I have to assume there could be some kind of retribution ... that's why we cannot have this around school,” she said.
