Wal-Mart shoppers target of telephone scam

SPRUCE HEAD (Sep 4): When Candy Davis answered the phone at her mother's Spruce Head home Tuesday, she was expecting to speak to a telemarketer.

Exclusive Offer" is what the caller ID showed, Davis said. She answered the phone on her mother's behalf.

A man on the phone told her she had won $300 worth of vouchers for gasoline and that the vouchers were redeemable at any gas station in the United States, Davis said. The man then started asking for personal and financial information in order, he said, to confirm her identity.

Suspecting a scam, Davis was leery.

I feel sick when I think of how people can rip others off as they do. I live in Los Angeles and am constantly hearing of things like this.

Phone scams seem to target older folks and it seems there is always a new one. Despite publicity on this issue, many elderly Americans lose money to these unscrupulous con artists - thankfully you were there when the call came in.
