Sen. Susie Collins not supporting bi-partisan resolution against "surge"
will draft her own (watered-down) version instead.

From the email from Ben Dudley, state chairman of the Democratic Party:

Two days ago, I sent you a note asking for your help. Senator Susan Collins needs to hear from her constituents that we oppose President Bush's plan to escalate the war in Iraq by sending 21,000 more US troops into the conflict and that we want her to sign the bipartisan resolution against the President's plan.

Senate Democrats and at least two Republicans, including Senator Snowe, signed onto a resolution calling on the President not to escalate the war and not to send 21,000 more American troops to Iraq.

Susan Collins stood with President Bush and refused to sign a bi-partisan resolution against the President's plan to send 21,000 more American servicemen and women to Iraq, although she admitted a surge in troop levels would be a bad idea. Her excuse was she opposed the resolution to stop Bush's escalation of the war because of wording. However other leading Republicans supported the bi-partisan resolution as is.

Now in what can only be seen as political gamesmanship to protect the President against the passage of the bi-partisan resolution, Collins is saying she is drafting a new resolution with different language. The bi-partisan resolution against escalation of the war is too important for Susan Collins to be playing political games with. The Senator has hinted that she opposes the President's plan to escalate the war, but it's time for her to set aside politics and join Olympia Snowe is signing the bi-partisan resolution against the surge in troop levels. We want to urge Susan Collins to support the bipartisan resolution against sending 21,000 more troops to Iraq and escalating the war, NOW!

I want to thank those of you who contributed $10, this week so that we can run an advertisement calling on Susan Collins to support the bipartisan resolution against the President's escalation of the war and to set aside political gamesmanship. Because of your support, yesterday we raised about three quarters of the funds necessary to run an advertisement on either the internet, or a statewide newspaper. Please contribute $10 Click http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=7gbc98bab.0.8ufkx8bab.87gse9bab.7272&ts=S0223&p=https%3A%2F%2Fmainedems.securevines.net%2Fforms%2Fcontribute.aspx">here
It is critical that we educate all Maine people about President Bush's plan to escalate the war by sending more troops to Iraq. Please write a letter to the editor of your local paper urging Senator Collins to put her money where her mouth is. If she really opposes the President's plan, she needs to do the right thing and sign the bipartisan resolution against the escalation of the war.

Time is running out. The Senate will soon vote on this important resolution, that's why we need your help today.

Together, we can send a message to Senator Collins to stop the games and sign the original bipartisan resolution.

1. Collins, Warner and Nelson (NE) present watered-down resolution
http://www.tpmcafe.com/blog/electioncentral/2007/jan/22/three_new_senators_oppose_escalation

Three new Senators have just unveiled a resolution today against President Bush's escalation plan: GOPers John Warner and Susan Collins, and Dem Senator Ben Nelson. The measure, which is intended as a softer alternative to the Biden-Hagel resolution introduced last week, stops short of advocating any sort of concrete Congressional action against Bush's escalation proposal; indeed, one of its most conspicuous features is its refusal to use the word "escalation" to describe Bush's troop increase. Rather, it uses the word "augmentation" -- the preferred language of the White House. On-air commentators are already starting to hail this resolution for its centrist and bipartisan nature and its reach for "compromise."

I disagree.

It's time for Susie to make good on her promise to only serve two terms. I know, she's already said she'll break her word and run again.

But breast augmentation???

And, Lefty, thanks for eliminating the caps.
