Slidell residents sway the City Council on replacing homes!
Slidell residents whose mobile homes were destroyed during Hurricane Katrina would be able to replace their dwellings if the City Council approves an amendment to the city's zoning code.
...
Planning Director Martin Bruno explained that the timeline for approving changes to the zoning code is required by the state and not a delaying tactic employed to wear down the residents. He encouraged people interested in the issue to attend the commission meeting April 17, where he plans to offer his support for the amendment.
...
Mayor Ben Morris said after the hearing that he still opposes amending the zoning code to allow replacing the mobile homes. He said the city should take the opportunity to upgrade homes in the city. The amendment would do nothing to improve the quality of life for its residents, he said.
...
Councilwoman Elsie Burkhalter, who proposed the amendment, said last month that she didn't favor replacing the mobile homes, but instead wanted to help residents find alternative housing, such as prefabricated or Habitat for Humanity homes.

1. I'm glad to read this.
Is it the responsibility of the government to upgrade homes? I can see having housing standards to make safe housing, but needing to keep them affordable is also necessary. If a community wants to upgrade homes, let them. But the city needs to do it, not require of the residents. Thanks for the news.
