Canizaro proposes subdiving City Park
From today's NYT:

Joseph C. Canizaro, a wealthy developer who sits on the mayor's commission, has proposed building new housing in City Park, the beloved New Orleans equivalent of Central Park, and letting some low-lying neighborhoods revert to marshland. Though the idea is politically hard to imagine, it is remarkable for being discussed at all.

Yeah, that's a great idea.

1. Judas H. Priest! Isn't City Park itself fairly low-lying?
I'd expect better from Canizaro -- maybe not all that much better, but...

Maybe his rival Pres Kabacoff, no doubt piqued at having been left off both the mayor's commission and the state nrecovery authority, will strike back with a plan that rebuilds the area on both sides of City Park as a whole, something that (we hope!) could never happen around Central Park or, perhaps a nearer equivalent, San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, also located at the edge of the city and separating residential neighborhoods (unlike Central Park which has hotels and even office buildings abutting its southern end).

Or if Pres is too busy scheming to demolish and gentrify the city's remaining housing projects, perhaps some interloper from way out there, let's say Hawai'i, could step in. (Hint: The guy in question had already begun sketching out such a plan.) Hey, it'll be a full moon again soon enough! :-)

3. I just put this on nola.us
of course that gives away my identity over there :-)

It'll be interesting to see what comes back from that. It's kind of a jangled mix of expats, the local techies who run the place, and the obligatory freeper-types.

4. Prez K already has dibs on the bricks
starting with Iberville.

Actually, all the property along Canal St. is pretty high, and with the street car line, I can't imagine but it's going to be much more valuable than it was before.

City Park is a national gem and should not be turned over to these fools.

2. Screw that!
Canizaro makes me sick. City Park floods every time it rains. After an inch or two, you'll see ducks floating around in there.
