New Year's Day was supposed to be the drop-dead date for Democrats getting into the 2010 race for U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning's seat. But that date passed, and the potential candidates with the biggest names are keeping their powder as dry as brut champagne.
The new deadline appears to be somewhere around April 15 -- tax day, which is apropos since whoever gets in ultimately will have to pay a high price to win.
Bunning has said the race will cost $10 million. That's probably low-balling it if you count the money the Democratic and Republican parties will pour into a race for what could be the Democrats' 60th vote in the Senate.
Bunning, a Republican, maintains that he is running for re-election for a term that would end when he's 85 years old. He has created a fundraising committee and reportedly has begun calling and asking for contributions.
Some still don't believe he's going to run.
