Blue Valley keeps novel in system
The Blue Valley Board of Education voted Monday evening to keep the novel Beloved by Toni Morrison in the curriculum, despite the concerns of one Blue Valley resident.

Overland Park resident Lisa Friedrichsen filed a formal challenge to Beloved at the end of the 2004-2005 school year. She asked the district to remove the novel from the communication arts curriculum because of what she felt was inappropriate content, including references to bestiality. She also questioned whether the novel fit criteria in the district’s selection policy for novels.

After reading the book and hearing arguments from both sides, board members decided in a 6-1 decision that the policy had been followed.

“I believe in every one of the categories that Beloved meets the intent of our curriculum,” board member Clint Robinson said.

That's good news! Too many school boards are caving in to demands from self-appointed "censors" when it comes to pulling books from the curriculum. I'm glad the Blue Valley board is showing some balls!

1. Meanwhile, they want us to study the Bible - as literature
which, if I recall, is a book that discusses slavery, incest, murder, and genocide, among other things.
