DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Pottawattamie County Auditor Marilyn Jo Drake said the vote count in the Republican race for county recorder on Tuesday's primary led her to question the county's new voting machines and request a recount by hand.

...

Drake said she felt something was wrong with the new voting machines made by Election Systems & Software, which use a scanner to count paper ballots. Under Iowa law, she can request a hand recount. Drake said they had problems with both styles - an M100, a precinct counter, and M650, which counts absentee ballots in the auditor's office. The company was sending a team of technical experts to Council Bluffs to investigate.

...

The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors approved the recount, which Drake felt could take up to 16 hours to complete. Close to 4,000 ballots were cast in Tuesday's primary in Pottawattamie County.

...

In Woodbury County, ballots for two precincts were mixed up, but that was discovered right away. In Dallas County, there were some programming problems with the handicapped assisted voting machines, and that also was discovered early.

------

Well, thank the powers that be that Pottawattamie had those paper ballots to fall back on when the machines acted up. I wonder what Drake would have done if they had been using all Diebold TSx with no printers. Ask the machine to give her the totals again?
