Fallon endorsed by the Iowa City Press Citizen
Edited on Sun May-28-06 10:13 AM by pstans
The Iowa City Press Citizen has endorsed Ed Fallon for the Democratic nominee for Governor. They did a really good job outlining the candidates attributes and limitations and explain why Fallon is the best candidate. It is well worth the read.

Ed Fallon comes to this race behind in fundraising, opinion polls and nearly any other usual measure of a candidate's success. But those traditional methods aren't really calibrated to measure Fallon's grassroots support. Because he has imposed a limit on campaign contributions and because he accepts no money from political action committees, the dollars he's raised represent more votes than they might imply.

Over the last 13 years as a state legislator from inner city Des Moines, Fallon's message has stayed consistent but has become more polished and more palatable. Recently, when he's spoken out for health care reform, election reform and education reform, he's not sounded like the ideologue rivals describe. Instead, he's sounded ... well ... right. Text

Add this to Sierra Club endorsement that Fallon got last week and his campaign is gaining some steam. During the past week I went to Des Moines and Ames. I saw only Fallon signs there, as well as here in Marshalltown, and my in-laws said Iowa City has a ton of Fallon signs all over. This is truly a Grassroots campaign that is inspiring many Iowans.

1. Fallon is an interesting candidate

a real "Grass Roots" candidate, as you say. But an endorsement by an Iowa City paper should be no surprise at all. After all, Iowa City is arguably the most liberal city in Iowa, and one of the more liberal towns in the nation. I like Fallon and some of his ideas, but am still not 100% sure about voting for him next Tuesday. It comes down to him and Culver. I hate to bring this up, but there is the issue, for lack of a better word, of electability. Would Fallon stand a chance west of Des Moines? Culver may, simply because of name recognition. No matter what, we cannot allow Nussle to govern our great state.

2. IMHO, Fallon is our best chance
to make sure Nussle stays out of the Governor's mansion.

People want a clear choice at the polls - I hear it over and over again. Fallon provides the clearest distinction between what Democrats believe in and what (and who) Nussle stands for.

3. I doubt the Press-Citizen will ever be accused of being "liberal"
Edited on Sun May-28-06 09:18 PM by rurallib
If the UofIowa Daily Iowan had endorsed Fallon that is a non-story. The Press-Citizen is now a Gannet newspaper as is the DMR and USA Today. I do not read the PC everyday, but on occassion. I would put them slightly left of middle. So, the Press-Citizen endorsing Fallon is a real story, not just another left wing rag falling in line. Were I to have guessed I would have bet they would back Culver.
On edit - this is just my humble opinion.

4. When Fallon was in Marion last week...
What was the big endorsement announcement he made? Was it the PC endorsement?
