While I was back in my homestate of Iowa over Thanksgiving, I was sent to the grocery store to pick up a few things. The Super Valu in my hometown hasn't really changed at all since I was a kid, but I did notice one difference. My grocery receipt was a bit more "political" than usual. Nestled among the prices was the phrase "IT'S A BABY NOT A CHOICE" (see pic on the right). I'm not sure whether this was put there by the Super Valu corporation or if it was placed there by the local owner, but it was the first time I had seen such a thing on a grocery receipt. Have I just been blind to it up to this point, or have grocery store owners used their receipts to broadcast their political views before? Frankly, I was very upset when I saw the receipt. I mean, $5.65 for a bag of softener salt? That's just insane.

1. I went to the original blog and asked for the town it came from...
Otherwise, I'd call bullshit. I find it hard to believe that a retailer would do that.

2. Gotta agree with you...

I worked for a SuperValu store here in Cedar Rapids growing up and from the kind of corporate culture I experienced they wouldn't do this.

They were VERY adamant about racial and religious tolerances, at least at the store I worked at, and can't see them being this narrow minded on abortion.

On edit: I hope this is some lamo attempt to paint Iowa negatively...it seems that is happening more recently with the whole first-in-the-nation status ordeal.

3. I've noticed a lot of outright hostility lately on DU, too...
if it is all about first-in-nation....well, screw 'em.

4. I would believe it from NW Iowa
The Orange City area in particular. I've been there once, and hope to never go back. It's just too weird.

5. Please go back
My partner and I love to go there and be visible during the tulip festival - they are Dutch, like half their relatives aren't gay for goodness sakes. My cousin - the Tulip Queen - came out about ten years ago. Unfortunately it was after she had left town.

Gotta go back if for no reason other than the almond patties. Yummm

6. Yeah, I'd believe it
from NW Iowa. I mean, these are the peopl who sent King to Congress, after all. But I do get tired of all the badmouthing of Iowa. I live in Illinois, now, and feel like I've fallen into a time-warp, social attitude-wise. My experience of Iowa is that it is MUCH more progressive than supposedly blue Illinois.

I'm guessing this is about the first-in-the-nation stuff. Given a choice, I'd rather have Iowa making major decisions about national politics than these wishy-washy opportunists in the Land of Lincoln.

7. I hear the DCCC is making a mess in an Illinois race
recruiting candidates to run against an established candidate in a primary - Ick.

I'm not agaisnt primaries - I am against the State or National party involving itself in a local decision making process. Save it for the General, that's not what we contributed money to the DCCC for!

Who is your rep?

9. My US rep is Jerry Weller
a Repug. He's not too impressive. I'm amazed at how many people here think Hastert is their congressman, because he actually comes to fundraisers and party events. Weller doesn't much, apparently.

My state rep is a Dem named Frank Mautino, and my state senator is a Dem, too--Patrick Welch. After years of Latham and Iverson, I kinda like being represented by Dems.

I dread the primaries. It will seem so wrong to just have someone hand me a ballot, after the real democracy of the caucuses. I'm actually thinking of driving over to Davenport the day of the caucuses and attending one with a friend. I know I can't vote, but it'll just be nice to feel a part of it!

As to Illinois politics, I'm still learning. I do know EVERYONE hates the governor--a dem. Downstaters hate him because he refuses to live in the state capital, won't leave Chicago. I'm not altogether sure as to why Chicagoans hate him, but they seem to.

Both parties seem disorganized to me in Illinois, so I wouldn't be surprised if what you say about the party backing a candidate in a primary is true. No one really seems to know what they're doing here!

8. I just did the same and also defended the State of Iowa
I'd like to know what town this store was in so that I can write the company and express my displeasure.

Doubt I'll hear back, probably just one more attempt to paint us as back-woods, conservative, uneducated hicks. :eyes:
