Vandals cause $100,000 damage at cemetery

MUSCATINE, IA - Vandals damaged or destroyed more than 70 headstones at Greenwood Cemetery, causing at least $100,000 in damage, police said.

Many of the headstones that were damaged were from the Civil War era. Others were estimated to be at least 100 years old.

While police have estimated damage at $100,000, Klimes said the headstones are priceless for their historical value. The cemetery, established in 1843, was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
