Steve King says "Joe McCarthy a hero"
There was a thread on here the other day about Rep. Steven King from western Iowa. King received some kind words from some on that thread.
Today I received an email with the following quote from Steve King. It was in regard to Rep. Barbara Lee trying to get a post office named for an elderly community leader in her district. Republicans have blocked this effort due to the community leader's past leftist activities.
Following a rejection of the measure, Lee made a statement blasting King that he responded to:

Lee, in a statement after the vote, blasted King, saying his "campaign of
innuendo and unsubstantiated 'concern' is better suited to the era of Joe
McCarthy and J. Edgar Hoover than today's House of Representatives."
To which King responded: "I think that if Barbara Lee would read the history
of Joe McCarthy, she would realize that he was a hero for America."

This, I believe, truly represents King's leanings.

2. Well, to turncoats like King, McCarthy IS a hero.
Because repukes worship anybody who is vile, corrupt, mean, small minded, and hateful, as long as they are right wing.

5. Actually, he's in Western Iowa
And that sucks for western Iowa. West of Des Moines is almost Nebraska like, hence jokers like King.

7. Sucks for Western IA - tell me about it.
Just when I think he can't be a bigger fool, he tops himself.

I bet King pleasures himself looking at that pic of Ann Coulter standing by McCarthy's headstone.

8. I'm without a home.
I can't believe what I'm reading here. Go back and read what most of you have written here. And we call republicans hateful? I don't know who to even side with anymore. I just want someone to look out for my interests, not just the big donors. But now we're supposed to find some rich Democrat to run against our enemy. Aren't the rich our enemies? Aren't the right wing the ones who irrationally demonize anyone who doesn't walk in lockstep? I don't know much about McCarthy - he was before my time. Maybe he went too far, I don't know. But harassing communists and hollywood doesn't sound like a mortal sin to me. The communists wanted to destroy our country, and hollywood is succeeding. They are spoiled rich kids. End rant. I'll be off looking for a new home now.

defending King's comments.

On edit, start with this site:

http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/USAmccarthyism.htm

<snip>
One newspaper, the Louisville Courier-Journal, reported that: "In this long, degrading travesty of the democratic process McCarthy has shown himself to be evil and unmatched in malice." Leading politicians in both parties, had been embarrassed by McCarthy's performance and on 2nd December, 1954, a censure motion condemned his conduct by 67 votes to 22.

12. Let me make a couple of points here
Edited on Fri Sep-30-05 10:51 AM by Broke Dad
Let me start by saying that both the extreme left and extreme right demonize people who do not mindlessly agree with them. We have a little of that going on here. As somebody who has been on the receiving end of some of these attacks, I can tell you that it is no fun. I believe in having citizens and elected officials who can think and make informed choices. The only thing worse than getting shot at by one side is getting shot at by both sides.

Second, I know Steve King personally. I worked with the man for two years. He is smart and hard working. But he is also a bully, a control freak and not above hypocrisy. He is a Catholic, and claims to be a Christian, but he wants to select who is his "neighbor." He married right out of high school and made his money with a bulldozer. You know the axiom that when all you have is a hammer the whole world looks like a nail? Steve King believes that you can push or bury anything or anybody that gets in your way. He is a true chicken hawk. Nobody in his extended family has ever served in the military, let alone a war zone, but he is the first to call for war.

Western Iowa doesn't see the real Steve King. Like a lot of right wing Republicans, he has a "good boy" side that he projects when he is with the little old ladies and the farmers in the district.

Finally, the views of Steve King are extreme. Period. That said, he likes to see his name in the press. So he spouts some of the darkness in his heart and the press goes wild. But, Steve King has served a shorter time in Congress than Tom Latham, Leonard Boswell, Jim Nussle and Jim Leach. Despite being the most junior Congressman, he is the most quoted. Except for Nussle's run for the governorship, the next name you hear for US Senate or other office is Steve King. Let me predict again that he will use a run against Tom Harkin in 2008 to warm up for replacing Chuck Grassley in 2010.

But just like his hero, Joe McCarthy, there will come a day when Steve King's dirty mean vicious bulldozer politics will fall from favor. I for one, believe that truth and facts, and progressive ideas, not name calling will hasten that day. This blog is my contribution to that day.

13. Thank you Broke Dad for sharing some personal info on King
with those of us who have suffered under Nussle for so long.

(Also of note today is how much money King has received from Delay's PAC with regard to the short period of time he has been in office).

18. Nothing personal on King
I worked with King when he served in Des Moines. We did not confide in each other. I distrusted him and I believe he returned the favor.

Okay, I know that King will run against Harkin in '08 (and most likely lose -- I DEEPLY HOPE) ... but replacing Grassley in '10?! Running against (most likely) VILSACK?! HAHAHA!!! OH MAN I'd love to see that!

21. The DM Register finally woke up
The Editorial Board of the Des Moines Register wrote in the Sunday edition that they regret endorsing King in 2002 and 2004 and called for a Republican to challenge him in the 2006 primary and the Dems to find a qualified candidate to run in the 5th!

Finally! Thank God for small miracles!

22. They had some under-the-radar neocons
like James Gannon running that thing for awhile and yuppie greedheads like Geneva Overholtser whose political acumen left a lot to be desired.I am so glad she and that other twit Dennis Ryerson are out of there. And out of state. Problem is the DMR still has that chubby bald fascist John Carlson phoning in from the right with a lot of war propaganda.

24. Here's another King gem...
I was at the Pottawattamie County Central Committee meeting and Jim (?) Chambers was there, and he told us that apparently King said this gem about Iraq:

"You know, them Muslims, there are only two things we can do to them: either convert them to Christianity or kill them."

And this guy represents me in Congress .... (groans)
