Poll: Pence leads Bayh
Poll: Pence leads Bayh

By JESSICA TAYLOR | 1/25/10 12:51 PM EST

A Rasmussen Reports poll released Monday shows GOP Rep. Mike Pence with a slight advantage over Indiana Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh, who is up for re-election in 2010. The survey reports Pence has a 3-point lead over Bayh, 47 percent to 44 percent, within the poll’s margin of error. Seven percent are undecided, while 3 percent said they’d back another candidate.

Pence, who met with National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn on Thursday, said Friday he would take the weekend to talk with his wife about a potential challenge.

Bayh narrowly leads another announced challenger, former GOP Rep. John Hostettler, 44 percent to 41 percent. Twelve percent are undecided, and 3 percent would support another candidate. The two-term Democratic incumbent’s lead widens to 12 points over state Sen. Marlin Stutzman, 45 percent to 33 percent. Sixteen percent are undecided, with 5 percent preferring another candidate.

President Barack Obama’s approval ratings in Indiana, which were also tested, showed 43 percent approve of the job he is doing, compared to 56 percent who disapprove.

I don't give a hoot about Bayh's ultimate fate, he has consistently voted against the interests of working Hoosiers. My concern is the low poll numbers of Obama in Indiana. It would be a disaster if Obama's poll numbers drag down a lot of worthy and deserving Democratic candidates.

1. That may be a problem. Unless we can sucessfully work around him.
We have IMO very qualified candidates for SOS, Treasurer and Auditor.

We especially need to win the SOS.

2. What's really sad is...
my suspicion that the reason Bayh is trailing in polls is that Hoosiers think he's too liberal. Re: Pence... to paraphrase John Goodman from The Big Lebowski, "Say what you will about the conservative wing of the Republican party, but at least it's an ethos." I'm just not sure one ever really knows what they're going to get with Bayh except for the plastered-on smile and votes that are the result of sticking his finger in the air to see what will be of the most benefit to him politically.

As far as Hostettler goes, I used to live in his district and you never knew what you were going to get with him either but you always knew it would be unreasoned and stupid. I'm sure he was on the dim-bulb list several times in his tenure.
