Teen accused of killing brother was pulled from school

RISING SUN, Ind. – The parents of a teenager accused of strangling his 10-year-old brother to satisfy a craving to kill pulled the teen out of high school two weeks before the killing, a school district official said Friday.

Andrew Conley's parents withdrew him from Rising Sun High School on Nov. 16 — 12 days before prosecutors said he strangled his brother Conner, said Stephen Patz, the superintendent of Rising Sun-Ohio County Community Schools.

Patz declined to state the reasons for the withdrawal, but said both Conley brothers were good students.

"Andrew was a good student, he had friends, he didn't have discipline problems. And the same thing for Conner," he said. "I think that's what makes it difficult for the community, the staff, the students, everyone, to try and come to grips with the situation."

Andrew Conley was scheduled to be arraigned later Friday on an adult charge of murder in his brother's death. His attorney, Gary Sorge of Lawrenceburg, declined to comment about the case through his office receptionist.

According to prosecutors, Andrew Conley showed no remorse when he described to investigators how he choked his younger brother, saying he strangled the boy to satisfy a craving like a hungry person eating a hamburger.

2. He says he identified with Showtime's original series Dexter
Does anyone think that show is irresponsible in that it is an ongoing series coming from a killer's perspective?

4. A) Pay Channel with Adult Content. B) What parent would allow their child to watch it?
Or at least block the station when they're not home?

Irresponsibility on the part of the parents, but that still doesn't account for a mentally disturbed child.

9. Actually he said he's been dreaming about
killing someone since the 8th grade. There is enough violence on TV and in the movies to encourage such a tendency.

3. Warning Signs
Perhaps we need to readjust those warning signs that seem to follow evey story about a killing. Students who are not popular, students who do poorly, students who drop out of school, come from broken homes etc. Many times none of the above is on the list of warnings. There must be other questions, the way he acted, did he have a fascination with death scenes in movies, off the cuff remarks about how little he thought of life, perhaps. In order to slow down this kind of tragedy we must dig a bit deeper into the why.

11. Children learn and are programmed by what they see, read and hear.
As a society..we cannot be drowning our children in scenes of violence and sex on a daily bases and then throw up our hands in horror when one of them acts out something he probably saw a dozen times a day.
I cannot believe how stupid many in society have become regarding how to raise a child.

12. Oh no, we absolve ourselves of any contribution
Sure, we live in the land of the High Church of Redemptive Violence, and every day is chock full of examples where might makes right. But we can hardly blame ourselves for that! Instead of promoting a more cohesive society, we need to manufacture and distribute more weapons, more popular entertainments, more violence, and more gore. Save a soupçon of horror, as you rightly suggest, for the statistically inevitable to happen, and continue on our merry, if bloody, way.
