CITIZENS ACTION COALITION ACTION ALERT!
Urge Support for a Clean Energy Bill (HB 1496)!
The Good: House Bill (HB) 1496 would create a Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) for Indiana. The RES in HB 1496 would require electric utilities to purchase an increasing amount of electricity from renewable resources (such as wind, solar and biomass) so that by 2016 at least 8% of our electricity would come from those sources. An RES is already in place in at least 20 other states, and under consideration in 15 more.
An RES would:
Attract billions of dollars to Indiana and new manufacturing opportunities as a new market sector is developed.
Create thousands of jobs.
Economically benefit communities throughout Indiana by spurring investment in wind farms and other renewable resources.
Clean up Indiana's air by reducing our reliance on coal-fired power.
The Bad: HB 1496 contains three other, non-RES (anti-consumer/pro-utility) provisions that would allow utilities to be unjustly rewarded, through accelerated cost recovery and financial incentives, for investments they are already required to make. These provisions have nothing to do with an RES, but everything to do with utility price-gouging at ratepayers' expense. These provisions must be removed from the bill.
ACTION: Contact members of the House Commerce, Energy and Utility Committee, who will be voting on HB 1496 on Thursday, February 15, 2007. Tell them to SUPPORT ONLY THE RES PROVISIONS OF HB 1496 AND OPPOSE ALL OTHER (THE PRO-UTILITY) PROVISIONS IN THE BILL!
