Daniels questions GOP lawmakers' desire to use state funds to curb rising homeowners' taxes

Gov. Mitch Daniels on Friday questioned House Republicans' top legislative priority: a quick fix to rein in rising property tax bills.
"I think we better be pretty careful about moving prematurely to spend money in any new direction," Daniels said of the House Republicans' plan to spend $150 million on property tax relief for homeowners through mid-2007. "Let's pay off the credit cards before we make any major new purchases."

When Daniels talks about paying off credit cards, he means the $750 million owed to schools and local governments. In 2001, in an effort to help balance the budget, the legislature authorized the state to skip a monthly payment to schools and local governments. That payment hasn't been made up.

"I think those things need to be attended to," he said.
