Time Zone Debate: To split the state, or not?
What began as an attempt to make time in Indiana a little less confusing has done the exact opposite, Hoosiers on both sides of the issue said Monday at the last of four federal time zone hearings.

"I don't think anybody imagined that going to daylight-saving time could possibly lead to the state being so fragmented," said Craig MacNab, director of public relations for AM General in South Bend.

.......

Seventeen counties petitioned to move to Central time; five made enough of a case to win initial approval from federal officials who regulate time zone boundaries: St. Joseph, Starke, Knox, Pike and Perry counties.

The agency is expected to make a final ruling early next year. About 200 people attended the nearly six-hour hearing in South Bend, their peaceful demeanor enforced by frequent reminders against outbursts.

1. Thanks Not My Man Mitch...
...Personally, I'm in the "they should've let well enough alone" camp, with Central being my second choice (we're fucking right next to Chicago and hundreds of miles from New York) but the rich cocksucking golf assholes wanted Eastern time.

The only good thing about this is it blowing up in That Man Mitch's face.

2. I saw a bumper sticker that said ...
wait for it ... :) ... "Ditch Mitch."

I agree with your time zone choices. I said when I first heard about Mitch's "plan" that it had to be from some Republican play book -- get in office and try to force through some stupid thing to show your power. Something like that. But, it's not exacty working out to show his power -- just opening a big can of worms and causing a lot of arguing. Wait! That IS the Republican way!

3. I want one!
It would go very nicely next to my "Think, it's Patriotic."

4. Agree.
One of the few good things about Indiana was the lack of time change.
Since we're getting it anyway, at least put us in central.

5. You don't want Central
Up here north of Chicago on the lake, it gets dark at 4:00...it would be even earlier farther east in Indiana...trust me, it sucks.

6. that doesn't make sense
Edited on Thu Nov-24-05 03:39 AM by thinkingwoman
If it got dark in Chicago at 4:00 then it would get dark in Indiana at 3:00 if we went Eastern.

Going by noontime sun and daylight hours Indiana should be central and so should Kentucky and half of Ohio.

Ok, on edit that is stupid...of course it would be dark at 5:00 not 3:00. I have drank too much port tonight and I apologize.

My second sentence stands however.

7. Our headquarters is on the Eastern time zone
so it makes no sense for me to support Central Time.

The legislature should reverse itself and put things back the way they were!

8. Personally, I'd support 2-hour Daylight Savings Time
because 1 hour does not make much of a difference. Other than that, I mostly deal with people in the East so I'd prefer Eastern. Eh, whatever, I won't be staying in Indy for more than a year tops.

9. One state, one zone, please...
Unless we all get on the same time zone (whichever one that ends up being), we're still going to have the challenge of explaining to outsiders why we are in different zones within the same state. I'm tired of trying to explain to folks outside of Indiana how this system does (or doesn't work).
C'mon, can't we all just get along???

10. That's why Indiana was always the way it was!
You couldn't get people near Dayton or Cincinnati to keep from switching to EDT in the summer, and you couldn't get the people near Chicago to leave the CDT.

Indiana will forever be a state with 2 time zones, no matter which daylight time we choose. Mitch merely made a bad thing worse!

Living in Central Indiana I was quite used to the additional hours of daylight in the summer, and watching TV cable shows that would normally be too late at night for me to watch in the Fall.
