Metropolis in Plainfield Anybody gone yet?
Can I post this subject in the Indiana forum, is that cool?

Just wondering about opinions about this place <http://shopmetropolis.com/>from anyone who's went yet. I drove past it before the opening it just seems out place for plainfield and not enough people live on the west-side of Metro Indy area who have the money in their budget to shop there. I've heard they have valet parking  and golf carts to take you to your car instead of walking. On the bright side I've also heard there have been out of towner's from ohio, Southern IL, and St. Louis coming long distances to check it, which is always welcome.

1. I haven't seen it, or even heard of it until just now
But the shoppes in it are certainly middle class shoppes. Maybe I will take the fam there this weekend or next.

2. Westsiders are NOT poor, Indy_Dem_Defender!
"...not enough people live on the west-side of Metro Indy area who have the money in their budget to shop there..." WTF??? What gave you that idea? Been listening to the local MSM again?
Contrary to what Carmel and the northsiders want you to believe, there ARE affluent neighborhoods on the west side of Indy (Speedway, for one). Hendricks County is one of the fastest growing areas of the state, and the folks moving in out there aren't exactly living in tents. Try buying a home in Hendricks County for less than $200,000 (you can't).
We've been starved for decent stores for years, forced to travel to Hastleton and Keystoned at the Crossing to find decent clothing.
It's about time that the national retailers took notice and started building out that direction. Now if we could just get some of the nicer restaurants (Benihana, Mongolian Bar B Que, etc.) to join them, life would be sweet.
I started shopping at the Metropolis anchor, JC Penney, as soon as they opened, when they were the only store in the middle of a big field. It has been consistently busy, and the store sales are strong.
As for the valet parking and golf carts, I think it's a great idea - for the aging baby boomers, seniors and handicapped customers, it makes shopping possible again. I applaud their efforts and plan to support them all that I can. Add in the fact that it's NOT a Simon-owned property and it's a win for everybody.
So, Indy_Dem_Defender, please don't paint all of us Westsiders as poor and destitute. It's just not true.

3. Hey Speedway Democrat
I Live on the westside of Indianapolis as well my whole life, so if I was insulting anyone with that message that is a westsider I would be insulting myself as well. MSM, I'd don't buy into the B.S. I get sick of hearing about carmel/hamilton county every five minutes on the news being the place to be as well. I've often wondered if I was the only one who observed this besides my family, I guess I'm not.

Shopping wise the westside just pretty much sucks, Lafayette Square has been on life support for last 3-4 years, and looks like a flea market, but there a still few good stores so I still shop there often. There's speedway supercenter which hey it's still holding strong, not alot guy oriented stores but good for females. the US 36/Rockville Rd area in Avon, I got say I'm not a fan, I'm not being PC here but I just have always got this feeling like it's a big republican yuppie playground, People have their noses up in the air at alot of the stores. I was at the best buy store there and had to return an item last year and I was pretty much harassed by the manager & Security like I was a criminal and they wouldn't take back my item, I go over to the west 38st store have no problems at all and receive my refund with excellent customer service.

What I'm saying is I just don't want to see two things happen in plainfield at metropolis, I don't want it to end up like Lafayette Square in 10 years half the stores vacant because people on the westside are more on frugal (Smarter) managing their money and don't go on crazy shopping spree's over a like a 1000 dollars a trip like these companies like. I just don't want to see these companies pull out saying poor sales are the reason, future prospect companies see this and decide hey I'm putting a store over there you can't make money. Also it's not PC to say this but I don't care, I don't like shopping around a bunch of pushy prime-donna yuppie republicans that look down there noses at me, or where stores treat the average looking customer below the yuppies. People see when they are treated poorly and when stores cater to yuppies and they don't come back.

The thing I like about the westside of Indy is people are less likely to treat others differently based on appearance then the northside and that's why I love it and choose to live here.

6. Hendricks county home owner here.
I am proud to say that it is becoming more and more diverse. I love it! I am determined to help make it go blue! I shop at that JC Penney in plainfield and it is always busy. I haven't been to the new metropolis, but faithfulcitizen has and loved it!

4. It seems to be normal mall with absurd pretensions.
I need a valet for my trip to the Yankee Candle Co.

5. Just thinking
Already some of those stores that only moved in a few years ago are transferring over to the new place. We will have to see, but it does seem as if the life of most centers are around 8-10 years. Just my thought on the subject. I live in Avon and many of these people have sky high mortgages and little furniture in their houses. They are way over-extended simply because they think they need to live here. Sometimes I too wonder how they can afford to shop, shop, shop. If they are smart it won't be with credit cards.

7. There's enough money there.
I used to manage one of the major clothing stores that left Lafayette Square. Most of the hardcore customers of the major stores in the mall were from Plainfield. Lafayette Square started to have a reputation for being dangerous and a lot of the shoppers from that area stopped coming. I can say that our business went from earning 1 Million a year after cost to about 300,000 after cost. They'll probably get shoppers from Brownsburg and Avon also.

10. Yes, it's f a b u l o u s! I love it & just so happen to be a Plainfield

resident. I have to admit, I had some preconceived notions about Plainfield before I moved here too. But, now that I'm here, we're here to stay; we love it! The parks are fantastic! And it's the bluest town in Hendricks. But, Plainfield is growing and mostly affluent communities.

Yes, Hendricks is the 2nd fastest growing county in Indiana and 14th in the nation. There's 20,000+ people in Plainfield alone. Add to that Avon (5000) Brownsburg (18000) , west side of Indy, and Mooresville...this mall is packed already! Also, the airport is moving further west and with the building of "Ronald Reagan Parkway", it will cater to the airport crowd as well. My guess is that's where the valet parking comes in as well as the convention center that's currently under construction. Also, the movie theater is awesome! Holds 4,000, has nice comfy seats, stadium seating, and 4 ft aisles. Not only do they have valet parking and golf carts/trams for the long walkers, their security all ride on Segways which I think is so funny  and kinda cool at the same time. The trams are a good idea considering it's an outdoor mall and eventually I heard there will be 300+ stores. (now there's about 40-50)The 3rd phase will be complete in 2007.

oh, by the way, there's free perimeter parking everywhere, but if you want to park directly in front of your store, it's metered...and get this: it all goes to charity! :)
