License Branches...Let me see if I understand this,
The state is closing down license branches in order to
cut costs. Then, it is announced that we will no longer
be able to renew our licenses online.

Doesn't that mean that branches will be busier, requiring
more man hours worked, thereby spending more money?

Makes no sense to me...but then I'm not Republican.

2. I would support closing some branches

Wisconsin has 110 branches vs Indiana with 159
Wisconsin counties 72 vs Indiana counties 92

Maybe somewhere between 111 and 158 branches

The following I would consider a starting point making adjustments as needed.

Every county with a land area of at least 400 square miles should (I think) have at least 1 branch. There are 44 counties that meet that criteria. Those counties that don't meet that criteria should either have a city in that county with at least 25,000 to qualify with at least one branch center. If they don't then they should utilize the services of a neighboring county.

WI 2005 population 4,937,000
IN 2005 population 5,599,000

Counties with land area less than or equal to 400 sq miles
339 Adams
165 Blackford
312 Brown
372 Carroll
375 Clark
357 Clay
305 Crawford
305 Dearborn
372 Decatur
362 DeKalb
393 Delaware
215 Fayette
395 Fountain
386 Franklin
368 Fulton
398 Hamilton
306 Hancock
393 Henry
293 Howard
382 Huntington
383 Jay
361 Jefferson
377 Jennings
320 Johnson
379 LaGrange
396 Marion
336 Martin
148 Floyd
375 Miami
394 Monroe
86 Ohio
399 Orange
385 Owen
381 Perry
336 Pike
190 Scott
398 Spencer
309 Starke
308 Steuben
221 Switzerland
260 Tipton
161 Union
234 Vanderburgh

3. Yeah, Indiana has too many
It's how they're being closed and how this is being handled that's the problem. Daniels will no doubt close down branches based only on political considerations. Just watch.

4. I agree it is political as well as sneaky
They waited until it was too late for the General Assembly to weigh in on it.

What do you think about my suggestion? I probably would mark the counties that could be merged and see which ones are next to each other.

Madison Wisconsin has 4 branches and it is about the size of Fort Wayne . I don't think Allen County should have more than 4 branches probably should only have 3. Allen County is 657 sq mi while Dane County is 1202 sq mi. Madison is in Dane County.

5. Square mileage
is not the best way to go. Population density is how you should disperse them. Dane County is Madison, yes, but much of the population there is there because of UW, and probably get their licenses elsewhere.

16. Each county should have at least one branch office
with additional branches being determined by population.

Not sure why for years there was a bloomington branch and an ellettesville branch (geographically very close) don't know if both are still open.

7. Hoosiers don't need no steenking licenses !!!
DMV branches in operation mean that people will have valid drivers lisences. People with valid drivers lisences can get to the polls on election day.

And Mitch just doesn't see any reason for that.

Besides, doesn't EVERYONE in Indiana have a driver ? Tsk.

10. Thanks
Living right in the middle of Indiana (the suburbs on the west sode of Indianapolis) I hear a lot of conservative bullshit all around me.

Nice to find a place where people have brains in their heads.

12. Welcome Fritz67!
I too am a westsider (Speedway), surrounded by psycho repubs who cover their cars in yellow "Support the Troops" ribbons, but then refuse to fight when you ask them "Have you served your country - you say you support it. Are you willing to send your kids???"
Really want to make them mad? Put a Kerry and Kernan sign in your yard and a peace flag in front of your home!
You know, Wayne Township has a great Democrat Club; let me know if you're interested. Next meeting is 7/12 at the Speedway Library at 6PM. You'll be happy to find other westsiders who feel like we do. You may be in a red state, but you are NOT alone!
And welcome to DU!
