Someone taking all copies of Nuvo to prevent others from reading
Nuvo is the Indianapolis alternative newspaper. It has an article this edition about the push in the leg. for an anti-gay marriage constitutional amendment. The title: Recruited by the Homosexual Agenda, apparently was too much for some bikeriding reader downtown. According to a WishTV report he was emptying newspaper boxes around the circle. I heard about it on the news, just after I had picked up a copy at a local store.

Odd thing - the newsitem said folks asked the guy why he was doing this and he said he was doing his job (and just what job is this?) I haven't seen this reported anywhere else. Probably just our hoosier variety of wingnut - but if it is part of something bigger (a paid job to censor folks from reading alternative media) then there is a story that should be pursued.

Indianapolis NUVO Newsboxes Emptied
Feb 19, 2005, 09:19 AM EST

(Indianapolis) -- Some NUVO readers found it hard to find their weekly newspaper around town. Someone is making an effort to empty some of Nuvo's newsboxes.

NUVO bills itself as "Indy's free thinking entertainment source." It's a weekly alternative to more traditional newspapers and that may make it a target.

It could also just be that the paper's free.

NUVO says it's accustomed to losing maybe a dozen at a time. But in this case somebody's taking a lot more, maybe 100 to 150 papers.

---snip

"The cover story itself doesn't lean one way or the other. It's a representation of the history of gay marriage and the proposed ban. So, it's an informational article about both sides," Skaggs told News 8.

3. It's not the first time...
NUVO papers have gone missing -- they used to disappear when the issue was "Mayor Goldsmith-related" (Remember the yellow "Goldsmith on Trial" cover? Unknown crooks tried to stop that one before the presses rolled by ransacking the offices!) NUVO tracks every returned newspaper for purposes of audits and economizing its print production runs. And those papers are collected every week at the same time the next week's issue gets delivered. But all the guys doing that drive trucks, as there are no foot delivery routes in Indy; the bundles are too big. (So, nope - he's "not working" as he claimed). I find this little incident funny for two reasons: 1.) it gains NUVO free press on the electronic media reporting on the story (and NO, I don't think they planned that) and 2.) it increases the pick-up rate, which in turn means: more pickups = better circulation and audit numbers = improved advertising rates and increased circulation on the issues to follow as a result. This idiot thinks he's hurting the publication, when he's actually helping.
And I doubt you'll hear coverage about it on the other local media; Star won't mention NUVO by name (credibility/competition) and WTHR is in bed with the Star as a "news reporting partner." HA HA.
