Indiana environmental officials extended an air-pollution alert through at least tomorrow for six Indiana counties -- including a warning in St. Joseph County that even healthy people should avoid outdoor activity.
In the other five counties -- Marion, Lake, Porter, LaPorte and Vigo -- the elderly and children and people with heart and breathing problems should limit or avoid outdoor activities because of unhealthy levels of microscopic particles, Indiana Department of Environmental Management officials said today.
Fine particles -- soot, dust and liquid droplets -- are linked to respiratory and cardiac problems. The state issued an alert about fine particles for the first time on Tuesday because a stagnant weather pattern allowed the pollutant to rise to unhealthy levels.
The alert will be extended through the week if the weather pattern continues, officials said.
