State Journal Register: Jail officials see spike in population
http://www.sj-r.com/Sections/News/Stories/50087.asp

"Sangamon County officials said they will keep a close eye on the number of inmates at the Sangamon County Jail after a spike in the jail population this past weekend.

One week ago today, there were 374 inmates in the county jail. That number rose to 392 on Saturday and hit 410 on Sunday. By comparison, the monthly average for January was 355 inmates.

Sangamon County Sheriff Neil Williamson said Thursday that jail officials are doing everything they can to keep the number of inmates down. Whenever possible, they release non-violent offenders accused of minor infractions, such as driving without a license, with notices to appear in court instead of housing them at the jail. They also sentence people to work release and home detention when appropriate.

Sometimes, however, suspects have to be held in the jail."
