News Advisory:

Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. will make a special visit to Metropolitan Family Services South Chicago Center on Tuesday, Feb. 22, to meet with South Chicago program staff and present a check representing a $100,000 federal grant he helped secure to support and expand Metropolitan's Young Fathers Initiative. Rep. Jackson recognizes the challenges many young South Chicago fathers face -- that's why he helped secure $500,000 in federal funding over three years to support the Young Fathers Initiative, a program provided by Metropolitan Family Services to strengthen a father's relationship with his children while offering financial education, job readiness skills and job placement.

"South Chicago is full of dads like the young men in the Young Fathers Initiative. Metropolitan Family Services has taken an innovative approach to engaging these young men, increasing their skills, strengthening their support and giving them the tools they need to succeed. An involved father contributes to the physical, emotional and financial well being of his children and family," said Jackson, who is the father of two young children.

WHAT: Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. will present a check for $100,000 to Metropolitan Family Services to support and expand the Young Fathers Initiative. Rep. Jackson was instrumental in securing a $100,000 grant for the program from the Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justices and Delinquency Prevention and has helped secure $500,000 in federal funding for the program.

WHEN: Tuesday, Feb. 22 from 10:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

WHERE: Metropolitan Family Services South Chicago Center, 3062 East 91st Street

WHO: Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. will meet with officials from Metropolitan Family Services South Chicago center, Dr. Richard Jones, President and CEO of Metropolitan Family Services, and a few South Chicago dads who participate in the Young Fathers Initiative.

------

Metropolitan Family Services is Chicago's oldest and largest non-sectarian human services organization with centers throughout Chicago and the suburbs and offers a range of programs and services to address the needs of the families and communities it serves. In operation for nearly 150 years, Metropolitan Family Services provides support in the areas of child and youth development, counseling and mental health, child welfare, family economic development, legal aid, and services for older adults and their families.

The Young Fathers Initiative, operated by Metropolitan's South Chicago Center along with the Southeast Chicago Development Commission, recognizes the important role a father plays in his family and community, and celebrates the positive influence these young fathers bring. The Southeast Chicago Development Commission, established in 1981 by business and community leaders as a resource, has been essential in the continued operation and development of this initiative.
