Chicago Tribune: Mayor’s pledge puts other politicians in ethics spotlight

"SPRINGFIELD -- State officials gave a chilly reception Wednesday to the idea of adopting their own versions of Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's personal ban on campaign contributions from government contractors.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who has built up a $10 million campaign fund by taking money from state contractors, wouldn't comment on the idea. Some of his potential Republican challengers urged him to follow Daley's example, but they refused to take that step themselves.

Legislative leaders said they see no need for such a ban.

But some lawmakers insist the public's negative view of government begs for change, and they hope Daley's pledge will spur action at the state Capitol this spring."

Why was it necessary for Daley to do this? His image must have taken some serious hits.
