"I still have a lot of support in the town of Cicero because they know I'm here and shouldn't be," Loren-Maltese said in an interview with the Tribune Monday. "Probably the hardest thing is I'm in here (and) I did nothing wrong."
About four years into a federal prison sentence that ends in 2010, Loren-Maltese usually is assigned to a California prison camp. But she has been in Chicago in the aging federal jail since last month when she testified at a trial in Tax Court.

In January U.S. District Judge John Grady turned down a bid by Loren-Maltese to reduce her 8-year sentence, saying she showed no remorse and still seemed to be the same small-town "dictator" who ruled "with absolutely no possibility of opposition." Loren-Maltese's crime "virtually bankrupted the town," Grady said.

Loren-Maltese said she passes her time inside the correctional center by reading true-crime books from the prison library--particularly those featuring protagonists railroaded by corrupt police and overzealous prosecutors.
