Alexi Giannoulias for Treasurer
I had the pleasure of attending a get together last night with Alexi Giannoulias and came away very very impressed. He is young (29 going on 30) but he really has a grasp of the issues that confront a treasurer.

Although he has some high profile backing (Obama, JJ Jr., Schakowsky, Danny Davis, et al) he is not the endorsed Democratic candidate. It appears Michael Madigan is pulling out all the stops to smear him. There is a mailer (tagged with paid for by the "Illinois Democratic Party") that linked Alexi with murder and Abramoff, so far I have I heard it is backfiring. I hope Alexi can pull this one off. Check out his Website:

1. I agree
I was very impressed by Alexi Giannoulias as well when he came to our group as well.

I do, however, find it ironic that if you simply changed Giannoulias' name with Cegelis' name and switched the office from Treasurer to 6th District congressional seat, you'd pretty much have the same situation.

- he really has a grasp of the issues that confront a treasurer - becomes - she really has a grasp of the issues that confront the people of the 6th District -

- Although he has some high profile backing (Obama, JJ Jr., Schakowsky, Danny Davis, et al) he is not the endorsed Democratic candidate - becomes - Although she has some high profile backing (DFA, PDA, Intl. Machinists Union) she is not the endorsed candidate -

- It appears Michael Madigan is pulling out all the stops to smear him - becomes - It appears Rahm Emanuel is pulling out all the stops to smear her -

- I hope Alexi can pull this one off - becomes - I hope Christine can pull this one off -

3. "Emanuel is pulling out all the stops to smear her"
I knew that would come up. Has Duckworth or Emanuel sent mailers financed with DNC or DCCC dollars blatantly smearing Cegelis? If so let me see it.

Also like Duckworth, Alexi is a first time candidate and is backed by Obama. You can drag the 6th CD into this thread if you need to find another platform to turn Christine into a martyr. There is a huge difference between being openly financed by the Illinois Democratic party (Mangieri) and backed by members and supporters of the DCCC (Duckworth). We all know that Rahm and co. have backed Tammy but the DCCC is not officially endorsing her, there is a HUGE DIFFERENCE.

Must everything be about the 6th CD? There is no comparison.

5. Yes have the following tactics been used on Cegelis?
I would say there is a HUGE DIFFERENCE but if you want to believe that there is not one to advance the Cegelis as a martyr image go right a head.

-snip-
Two mailings targeted to Obama's and Jackson's South Side base paint Giannoulias and his family as crime-connected — which Giannoulias vehemently denies as "dirt."

Campaign finance records show the Democratic Party deposited more than $100,000 in Mangieri's campaign fund.

And Giannoulias said he received a phone call, warning him photos from college would be used against him.

"Believe me, there's nothing on that," Giannoulias said. "I played basketball, didn't do drugs, no pot-smoking. It's 1920s-style threats.

"I didn't join the race to be a renegade fighting the party. I've called (Madigan) three or four times to pay my respects, but he doesn't take my calls."

AGAIN!!! This is a thread about the race for treasurer but if it has turned into a 6th District thread. . .go ahead keep the martyrdom going.

11. that argument is made of lycra.
Mangieri is one of the best. He's a GREAT guy, a GREAT father and a GREAT States Attorney and he will make a great Treasurer.

2. I'm a downstater
I was hoping the party would run a good downstate candidate so that we aren't once again put in the embarrassing position of having an all-Chicago ticket. That hurts the party a LOT, much more than people in Chicago realize or understand. That's why I was very let down when Madigan chose a yahoo like Mangieri. He's a two-time loser that is very difficult to take seriously and could never get elected statewide on his own.

I saw a Mangieri mailer in downstate that showed a high rise in Chicago where Giannoulias apparently lives next to a picture of Mangieri's traditional small town home. It attacks Giannoulias for working at his father's bank and being "Young, Single, Rich." I think it will backfire as well. Very disappointing attacks from a weak and desperate candidate that has nothing to offer voters but ambition without talent.

There are a lot of intelligent, electable, capable downstate Democrats that could have been slated for Treasurer. I'm disappointed the party didn't pick one of them and I question Madigan's motives for picking such a poor candidate.

6. I got one of those "robo-calls" yesterday from Jesse White
asking me to vote for Mangieri. I hung up as soon as I heard Mangieri's name. Not because he's from downstate, but because of the fact the Madigan picked him.

I despise Mike Madigan and everything he stands for, but I do like his step-daughter Lisa. She definitely has a future in Illinois politics.

What about the mafioso that he worked with?

8. I know Paul Mangieri very well
Talk about impressive! He's a natural for Illinois State Treasurer.

He's an unbelievably wonderful guy, and he's on top of all of the issues relevant to Illinois. I can't think of anyone who is more qualified for the job.

Paul is the type of person who you could talk to if you had a problem. You could walk up to him on the street and ask him for help and he'd surely be there for you.

I'm voting for Paul and I hope everyone who reads this votes for him as well.
