Navy had problems with UH (UARC) contract
This is just rich! After all the contortions UH bigwigs went through to get UARC approved, over the objections of faculty, students, and pretty much everybody, the Navy almost pulled out because of the few minor concessions that were made!

Internal e-mails between senior U.S. Navy officials reveal that the Navy had problems with a "no classified research" stipulation set by University of Hawai'i President David McClain for a proposed university affiliated research center....

At the Feb. 16 regents meeting, McClain outlined four stipulations, which were later described as "problematic" by another senior-level Navy official:
(UARC not part of UH-Manoa and no classified work for three years were the main ones)

And the kicker:

Kajihiro said the Navy documents are among the first FOIA responses he has received in regard to the UH UARC.

"There seems to be a lot of secrecy surrounding the establishment of the UARC. There are many questions that have been left unanswered. I am hoping we will be able to get much more in order to really understand the implications of the UARC," he said.

Indeed.

4. The .mil kind of gives it away

As I recall, they used to rent out time on some of their less powerful machines to commercial interests. I thought it would be really cool to use that to set up, say, a search engine; we could have called it "SurfMaui" or the like.

At the time, MHPCC was run by the Univ. of New Mexico. (Go figure.) Once the UH team, which is a consortium with (surprise!) a major defense contractor, took over, the time leasing seems to have gone away, and with it any efforts to leverage that tremendous resource to bring (non-military) high tech to Maui.

edit: note to self: buy a vowel
