UH faculty senate shoots down UARC

UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII faculty leaders voted yesterday to oppose a $50 million Navy research center planned for the school's main campus.

After two hours of debate, the Faculty Senate voted 31-18 for a resolution asking school administrators to reject what would have been the first such military research center on a campus in more than 50 years.

The faculty's opposition to the center puts the future of the project in doubt because administrators were waiting for the vote before deciding if the deal should proceed.

The 10-campus system's interim president, David McClain, and the Manoa campus interim chancellor, Denise Konan, would have to approve the center in order for it to go to the Board of Regents, possibly by early next year.

Unfortunately, this isn't the final nail in the coffin, but McClain and Konan -- note that both are "interim" -- would have to be nuts to thumb their noses at the faculty senate and send it along for a rubber stamp from the Board of Regents, which is packed with Lingle cronies/repuke hacks (the bio of one, Kitty Lagareta, does not list so much as a bachelor's degree :eyes: ). That would amount to a declaration of open war (pun intended).

Why, you may ask, is UARC such a bad idea? Aren't I just being another knee-jerk anti-military commie pinko? :sarcasm: Well, let's see: beyond the usual issues around the continuing militarization of the islands, O'ahu in particular, UARC researchers are sworn to secrecy, so no technology transfer allowed; international faculty aren't allowed to participate; and UARC participating faculty get drug tested, which is not only ccontrary to UHPA's collective bargaining agreement but is also patently ridiculous; how much of a hard rug problem can there be among top-level university researchers? :smoke:

All of our hard work finally paid off ...!!!

You know, one of the greatest arguments you never seem to hear is that the Navy (well, military as a whole) is a sexually discriminatory element ... i.e. the "don't ask don't tell" policy.

This FAILS to line up with the ethics of an institute of higher learning in the 21st century.

How could these two elements combine?
