Town Hall meeting in Athens TONIGHT 01/18@7pm RE: GOP redistricting plan
Edited on Wed Jan-18-06 05:28 PM by CottonBear
We can use all the help we can get from the residents of Athens-Clarke, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Madison and Walton and also from all other Georgai Democrats. Call Sonny Perdue today and voice your opposition to the proposed redistrciting which will split majority Democartic Athen-Clarke County in half. :( Se my previous post for more info on the GOP plan.

Legislators plan Town Hall meeting in Athens

State Reps. Keith Heard (D-Athens) and Jane Kidd (D-Athens) will host a Town Hall meeting Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Athens Regional Library.

The lawmakers will discuss issues being addressed during the current legislative session, answer questions and solicit public comments on the Senate Reapportionment Committee’s recent recommendation for election-year gerrymandering of the 46th and 47th Senate Districts.

That action, if approved by the Republican majorities in both the Senate and House of Representatives and signed by the governor, would create unnecessary confusion in at least four Georgia counties for the upcoming 2006 primaries and general election.

Under the proposal, Athens-Clarke County would be divided into two Senate districts. All of Oglethorpe County and half of Madison County would be moved from the 46th to the 47th District, and Walton County would be moved from the 47th into the 46th.

This would be the third reapportionment of those Senate Districts since 2001.

All residents of Athens-Clarke, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Madison and Walton counties are invited to attend. Athens Regional Library is located at 2025 Baxter St. in Athens. For more information, contact Rep. Heard at 404-656-0220 or 706-353-1772 or Rep. Kidd at 404-656-0325 or 706-543-5195.

1. Call up the Reapportionment Committee
I was at the meeting tonight. The Republicans do *not* want this to be an campaign issue, so let's make it one. Call up Bobby Smith, the Chair (I think) of the Reapportionment Committee and voice your opposition. (404) 656-5087. Also, call Speaker Richardson's office at (404) 656-5020. If you want to call Sen. Kemp, who's supporting this travesty, his Atlanta office is (404) 463-1366.

We can still defeat this thing. I'll be *damned* if I end up in the same Senate district as the hinterlands of Jackson County, but not with the same city I live in!

2. I was there too! I was the woman who spoke about the non-partisan vote
I was sitting near Commisioner Maxwell.

I spoke about non-partisan voting (passed during last election), Barrow being redistricted out of Athens and the State Assembly moving the dates of our runoff election to the time of year when msot people are out of town. I asked about Cagle's role too. (Heard said he switched about 500 voters in his district.)

I spoke with both Rep. Kidd and Rep. Heard as well as the North Ga Democrats and the A-CC DEmocratric Committee people.

Do I know you? PM me. I'm very involved in local politics.

There is a protest tomorrow a the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce Building (Hancock Avenue) from 3:30 to 6 pm . It is a quiet protest but NOT silent! MAddy Powell (who spoke as well: she was the tiny, little blonde lady in back row) has a protest permit for the whole block around the cahmber building! Grady Smith of the A-CC Democratic party will be there too! I've got to be downtown at 5pm so I'm going to go early and protest! TELL EVERYONE TO GO DOWNTOWN TOMORROW from 3:30 pm to 6 pm.

Peace. CB

I'll be at the protest tomorrow! BE THERE!

The Chamber of Commerce gets an 'F' from CottonBear!

BTW, wasn't Mayor Davison awesome? I have never seen or heard her so very angry. She made a righteous speech!

Carter surprised me. He voted for Republican Kemp even though he's a Dem. But, he did say he wouldn't be fooled again!

Commissioner Maxwell preached the TRUTH!
